Gola di Gorropu
We leave from Orosei before to start driving off-road to descend in the valley where the path begins. We start the hike wading the Flumineddu river to enter in the woodland formed by Olm oaks and Mediterranean scrub. Walking along the cliffs of Mount Oddeu we get the entrance of the Gorroppu canyon in less than 2 hours. You will be astonished walking by the rocky walls which rise for more than 400 meters over the river bed, the Gorrupu canyon is one of the deepest canyons in Europe!!! During the trekking you will discover the unique microclimate of the canyon that allowed the giant growth of some trees like the Phyllirea and the old Yew tree; there is besides an endemic grass, the Acquilegia di Gorropu, present in very few individuals inside the canyon. When the path becomes more rough the hike become harder, sometimes you have to use the hands to proceed through the boulders then, when it is no longer possible to go further, we get back on our steps.

I had an 8am pickup from my accommodation and then was driven out to Dorgali where we picked up the last 2 members of our group. Then it was off to campo base Gorropu where we started the 700 metre descent in a 4 wheel drive on a dirt road to the start of the walk to the canyon. It is a 3km walk on a dirt track to the canyon entrance where our guide, Sergio organised the entrance tickets (6 euros cash each). Then we started the 1 km walk into the journey. It is divided into 3 sections. Green (easiest), yellow (harder) and red (for for the daring). Each section involved over or around large boulders. Sergio ensured we knew the safest way to negotiate the path. He told us about flora found in the area as well some history of the canyon. He was a wealth of knowledge of the area. Once we exited the canyon, we stopped for lunch (which we brought - there were any food to be bought inside of the canyon) in a section of the canyon where fresh water pools allowing you to dip your feet in the cool water. After lunch we walked back to the four wheel drive and Sergio skilfully drove us up the tight winding dirt road back to the main road. Then he drove us back to where he picked us up. A great day best tackled early in the day due to the heat as well as the crowd of people who arrive in force by 11am. I really recommendation this tour. Though you need to have a reasonable level of fitness.

This exceeded our expectations and was a fantastic trek. Sergio is a fantastic guide, friendly, very professional, knowledgeable, well organised, attentive to everybody's abilities. The hike kept getting better and better with a particularly picturesque lunch spot to top it off.

Great trip and Sergio was a fantastic guide who was very informative as we went along. We enjoyed this trip so much we booked with him the next day to go to Tiscali which was just as good a trek if not better. Don’t wear flip flops or sandals though but trainers with grip are fine if you don’t have hiking foot ware.

My family and I had such a wonderful time hiking Gorropu canyon with Sergio. I wasn't sure how my 6 and 9 year old would do on a long hike, but they hardly noticed the distance because Sergio made it so fun. He set a perfect pace, told us all about the wildlife and plants in the region. The canyon is stunning, but Sergio made it an unforgettable experience for our whole family.
