Diego really is the best at what he does, he has an incredible ability to find birds. I'm really still very impressed and we're super happy to have toured with him. We managed to see, among other birds, the quetzal, bellbird and the tucansito that were the ones that my boyfriend and I most wanted to see.

Serious birders take note -- Diego is an AMAZING birding guide, probably because he's more than a guide -- he's a researcher. He knows SO MUCH about the birds here, and the level of expertise and detail goes way beyond just pointing at birds -- although he is also very, very good at identifying by sight and ear, and good at helping us see the birds. We had a guide in Arenal who would see the birds easily but I could never tell where it was from his description -- not so with Diego. I saw pretty much every single bird he showed us, which felt like a miracle. He was so clear in his descriptions. His English is very fluent, and he uses a laser pointer to show the general area of (not directly on) the bird. Diego fits our preferred style of birding -- focus on the birds and nature. We really liked his calm energy and his skill at guiding us away from the many, many crowds while not missing the birds -- we chose him because he said he prefers to guide for small groups, and we felt very lucky compared to the groups that had 10+ people loudly chatting as they looked for (and scared away) quetzals. He somehow was able to make our visit to Curi Cancha, which can be a birding circus with lots of paparazzi gawking at the quetzals, a serene experience of nature. We were often totally alone on trails looking at amazing birds, and when crowds started to gather for quetzals or trogons, he would angle for a better look a short distance away from the crowds. That said, he worked cooperatively with other guides and would help others find birds, meaning we also benefited from collective information when other people found birds elsewhere. I really liked this about all the Costa Rican guides, the cooperative spirit. But when he found a bird first, which was more often the case, we always had a few minutes with the best looks before the crowds started to gather. We learned so much from him and got some great photos and videos of many beautiful birds. He taught me how to take pictures through his scope! Our biggest highlight other than the quetzals and trogons was a sighting of the highland tinamou -- unfortunately no picture due to dense overgrowth, but I got a really good look at it with my binocs. Still riding off that high. He's also very responsive on Whatsapp -- I had some frustration with some of the popular guides taking a long time to get back to me or not answering all my questions, but Diego responded quickly. He also recommended another great guide for our last minute Santa Elena cloud forest visit on a day he wasn't available. All in all, we feel very, very lucky to have had Diego as our birding guide.

Diego knows his birds, calls and habitat. Above all, he is just a really good guy that you will enjoy spending time with. My wife and I birded with Diego in Curi-Cancha Reserve all morning, and he put us on over 60 species of birds, including the resplendent quetzal, the keel-billed toucan and many more. We had a fabulous time and it will be the highlight of our trip to Costa Rica!

We run a Bird Watching Tour with Diego! I work as Guide in another country but I don't have much experience in Costa Rica We visited Monteverde and wanted to know some species of the area and endemic to Costa Rica. Diego is really phenomenal I recommend it 100% we visit the Curi Cancha Reservation and we observe a lot of birds, the patience and love with which Diego explains himself is incredible! I recommend it and do not miss this opportunity.

I had the pleasure of walking a few hours with Diego in the forest, it has been one of the most wonderful experiences I have had. I have never met such a person with as much passion, Knowledge and Education as Diego. I have been birdwatching in the United States for some years now and I have traveled to other countries such as Africa and South America. Diego is in the top standard of guides. He has incredible potential and is an incredible bird watcher. He knows about Songs, behaviors and Natural History. This seemed incredible to me because many guides only focus on pointing out birds and tell you, mention names and that's it. Diego tells stories and the why of each thing. Simply Phenomenal 5 stars are not enough, it would be more than 10!

As an interested biologist (but not hard core birder) I had the privilege to be guided by Diego on this fabulous tour. He knows all Costa Rican bird species and is amazing in localising them with much patience. I have seen many species and made fantastic pictures and videos through his scope from quetzals, a toucannet and bell birds. I was impressed by his knowledge on the ecology, life styles and behaviour of the species, and he pointed out the plants and insects they eat. We had interesting conversations about the evolution of bird species. I had a great time and learnt so much in this half day! I can warmly recommend Diego.
