2 excellent organised trips. First to Ras al Jinz and followed by a very exiting trip to Jebel Shams. Oman day tours are not cheap, but they offer super value for the money and their tourguides are both very knowledgable and flexible.

Driver Juma picked us up at hotel at 8am. Drive to Nizwa Fort should be two hours but as we stopped along the way at a local market and at an Omani sweet store, we arrived at Nizwa close to noon. Nizwa Fort and Castle. We spent about 2.5 hours there. Went to the souk (market) - visited a shop selling dates, spices, sweets. Many souvenir shops including daggers, silver shops, rifle shops! Nizwa Fort entrance fee was 5 rial, not included in the package. There was a woman selling Omani bread. Fort contained decent exhibits of history of Nizwa, Oman, etc. We had late lunch at a nearby Yemeni restaurant. After that we drove another 1.5 hours, some rocky roads, to Jabl Shams, the “Grand Canyon” of Oman. Juma laid out tea and coffee for us, freshly brewed. We were visited first by a single wild goat and then a whole herd of 7-8 with babies. They were keen to get food from us. By the time we left Jabl Shams it was already sunset (and the view there was magnificent). We arrived Muscat around 8pm. As it was a "custom" tour, it's quite different from the description here. But it was all very pleasant. Juma was very hospitable.

We had a great day out visiting NiZia and Jebel Shams with our local Omani guide Jamu. He was welcoming, informative and very generous with his time and hospitality. Nizwa was beautiful with the souks, forts and minarets. The Omani troupe performing in the fort was particularly enjoyable. From there we visited Jebel Shams which takes a bout another 90 mins but is worth the trip for the majestic views. Jamu provided table , chairs and refreshments which were very welcome. We stopped on the return via Jamu’s village of Fanja which would definitely be worth a longer visit. Our boys (10 and 13) are not generally fans of long car trips but both said they enjoyed the day - high praise! Jamu was very informative about Omani life and culture. Oman day tours also organised our half day city tour and dolphin/snorkelling. The latter was particularly enjoyable with lots of dolphins and snorkelling with sea turtles! Overall the price seemed fair for the length of the tours. We would definitely recommend to others. The only improvement would be to provide more history and information on the sites.
