This isn't a typical castle day trip. Join me for a journey through Lithuania's layered identity — Teutonic Knights, the Polish union, Soviet rule, basketball obsession, and the quiet pride of a country that refused to disappear. My commentary is personal, the history is real, and the route takes you through both the Soviet-era blocks and the UNESCO-listed Old Town before heading out to Trakai.
I will play music along the journey, from eurovision to songs of the forest by the fire, and then in Trakai there is free time to explore including optional castle entrance (14€ in high season) as well as lunch with me at a classic traditional spot!
On the way home we will stop by the Hill of Angels, a site built in 2009 devoted to spirituality and to celebrate Lithuania’s ‘anniversary’.
Looking forward to hosting you!

Jim picked us up at Cathedral square. Gave us a history of Lithuania through the ages. Provided a bottle of water. Gave us a city tour and answered all questions. We visited the castle during the tour. It was €14 outside of the tour. It’s not worth the €14 as there’s not too much there and what is doesn’t always have an explanation for what is there. After the castle there’s a few nice small souvenir shops. We had a great day for it. Afterwards, Jim brought us too a local restaurant. We ate local cuisine and all enjoyed it. This is a small group tour max 8 people and Jim was a gentleman. Highly recommend him.

A fantastic, detailed and well-thought-out 4 hours of history, politics, culture, music and fun. Jim was super friendly from the off and provided us with a warm welcome and bottled water, always ensuring we were all happy and comfy. He showed us around Vilnius' old town and soviet areas before moving on to Trakai with constant, detailed, interesting narration along the way and even well-chosen songs interspersed along the way to illustrate the stories he was telling us. At Trakai we were given free time to explore and recommendations (we followed all of them, including the castle at an additional low price of ten euros) before we reconvened at a really popular restaurant where Jim guided us through the menu with descriptions and tips. It was lovely to all dine together, the food was tasty and good value for money and our guide ensured we could all take our leftovers home in doggy bags. On the return journey we saw the Hill of Angels and had free time to wander, and before Jim dropped us off, he made sure we all had further recommendations of where to eat, drink and explore. He even pledged to answer further questions on WhatsApp should we have them, which we later did with some walking tips. Jim was so entertaining and warm and personable and as a British native and outsider, so enthusiastic about Lithuania that it was hard not to feel the same way too! Highly recommended for a half day of exploring and fun.

The journey to Trakai was very interesting. Jim was very knowledgeable and gave an indepth insight into the complex history of Lithuania, interspersing it with humour and music. The castle itself was interesting and there was a lot to see, so worth a visit.

During one day, we wanted to see as much as possible from Lithuania and contacted Jim for consulting. He was very flexible and after some correspondence a private whole day trip from Vilnius was arranged by him, finally reaching to the unforgettable Hill of Crosses in the northern part. The long drives were comfortable and safe, and when we add that Jim is an enjoyable person, what more can anyone wish for one day in Lithuania :-)
