Along the way, a local guide will share cultural insights into the relationship between foxes and shrines, Shinto beliefs, and proper shrine etiquette. Continue to a unique cave temple, where you’ll learn about the tradition of washing money for good fortune. Next, enjoy a 30–40 minute forest hike, surrounded by nature and varied terrain, leading to the iconic Great Buddha of Kamakura, an impressive monument with over 800 years of history. Conclude the experience at a temple-run restaurant, where you’ll enjoy local specialties such as udon and vegetable curry.

I highly recommend this walking tour of Kamakura. It was easy for us to reach Kamakura by commuter train from Tokyo and to meet our guide Ken. During the walking tour, Ken explained the history of each shrine and temple that we visited and showed us the proper etiquette to follow. Because this was a walking tour, we were able to see many neighbourhoods and smaller streets that would be inaccessible to a bus tour. It really gave us a feel for the town of Kamakura. Along the way, Ken took many photos of my friend and myself and helped to arrange a delicious vegan meal overlooking the water. At the end of the tour, Ken made sure that we were on the correct platform to get back to Tokyo. Thank you Ken for a highly enjoyable day. 有難う御座います

I booked a solo trip to the Kamakura Historical Walking Tour with the Great Buddha on April 21st, and was expecting a small group experience of up to 7 people. When I arrived that morning, everyone else was a no-show, leaving just me and my guide Hajime (Jim) for what became an unforgettable experience. Because it was just the two of us, we were able to move at a much faster pace and visit many more locations than a standard group tour would typically cover, and were able to explore lesser known areas. Jim's knowledge of the area's history goes far beyond what any guidebook could offer, and his storytelling is natural and engaging. We also had a really delicious lunch at a tiny local spot that perfectly captured the kind of authentic experience you hope for when traveling in Japan. Our conversations flowed easily throughout the day, and it genuinely felt less like a tour and more like exploring Kamakura with a knowledgeable local friend. Jim provided such an amazing and wholesome experience. I would highly recommend him and this tour. Jim if you're reading this, thank you once again!

Toshi was an excellent tour guide! He was knowledgable and extremely easy to chat to, and spoke wonderful English. The tour itself covered the best parts of Kamakura, with Toshi giving us some options to adjust the tour to our liking/tiredness level. The sites were beautiful, and we spent the perfect amount of time at each one. My husband and I had a fantastic time and would recommend this tour to anyone.

A 10 out of 5. Mark (Masa) was outstanding. I’d rate this trip way beyond expectations. We learned so much about the customs and culture of Shintoism and Buddhism. The day was beautiful and we had a spectacular time. Would highly recommend this to anyone who wants a cultural experience beyond Tokyo.

This was a tour for active people who do not mind putting in 12000 steps, hiking through a slightly challenging trail. We saw many shrines and temples. Toshi was our guide and she was great.
