Explore three of Kanazawa’s most iconic historical areas — the Nagamachi Samurai District, Kanazawa Castle, and Kenrokuen Garden — on this relaxed walking tour.
Begin in the preserved Nagamachi Samurai District, where samurai once lived. Walk through narrow streets lined with earthen walls and waterways while learning about samurai culture, daily life, and social structure. You may also visit the Nomura-ke Samurai Residence , where authentic artifacts such as kimono and swords offer insight into Edo-period life.
Continue to Kanazawa Castle to discover its white design, defensive architecture, and the history of the Maeda clan as you explore the stone walls and grounds.
Finally, visit Kenrokuen Garden, one of Japan’s Three Great Gardens. Learn about its “Six Attributes of Beauty” while enjoying seasonal photo spots.

Nomura Family Samurai House
On the Nomura Samurai House tour, we briefly introduce the history of the Nomura family, high-ranking samurai who served the Maeda clan. Inside the house, we explain how samurai lived and the values they respected, such as discipline and responsibility. We also explore the beautiful garden and its unique two-level pond, showing the harmony of design and function. Finally, we connect samurai culture to modern Japan, highlighting how their spirit still influences society today.
Kanazawa Castle
On the Kanazawa Castle tour, we introduce the history of the Maeda clan, one of the most powerful samurai families in Japan. As we walk through the castle grounds, we explain the defensive design, large stone walls, and wooden reconstruction of the castle buildings. Visitors learn how the castle functioned not only as a military fortress, but also as a political and cultural center. Finally, we connect the legacy of the Maeda family to the development of Kanazawa’s art, craftsmanship, and refined culture that can still be seen in the city today.

We were a group of 10 and had Ilya as our tour guide and it was a great walking tour! Super informative and comprehensive. Ilya explained things very thoroughly and patiently and was funny and considerate of all participant. He had some illustrated posters to help with the explanations and we covered a lot of ground in Kanazawa, from the samurai houses to the gardens and castle. I loved that he focused on the tour and making sure we covered all the important spots without either spending too much time or ‘encouraging’ us to shop or buy things along the way as some tour guides do. He was well informed and did an amazing job. This was a free tour but was even better than some paid tours I’ve done in the past few days. At the end we got some really good recommendations on places to eat. Thanks!

Aiko was such an amazing tour guide! I love her personality. She is so warm and bubbly and is such a good history teacher. She is a former elementary school teacher which is why I think she is such a great storyteller. Great tour to learn about the rich history and culture in Kanazawa, I highly recommend this tour, especially if you are lucky enough to have Aiko-san as your guide!
