High in the northeast corner of Nepal’s Taplejung district lies Kanchenjunga South Base Camp. Kanchenjunga (8,586 meters/28,169 feet), the world’s third-highest mountain, straddles the border of Tibet, India, and Nepal, standing tall above. On one of Nepal’s most remote trails, the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek provides the adventure of a lifetime.
Learn about the local Rai, Limbu, and Tibetan villagers who call this place home.
Though they are all Nepalese, each group speaks their own dialect, practices their own rituals, and has their own customs. Also, home to this region is rare animals, such as the Himalayan Tahr, Himalayan black bear, musk deer, the snow leopard, and even the sly Red Panda. For the birders out there, you’ll have the opportunity to see, snow cock and pheasant, among others.
If you are up for a journey that is comparable to the Everest Base Camp Trek in terms of views, but with far fewer trekkers, the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek is perfect for you.

Today’s trek will be mostly uphill on an easy trail that mostly follows alongside the Kabeli Khola. Throughout the hike, we admire the beautiful ridge beyond the stream. We follow a few switchbacks up the valley and then descend under rocky cliffs, on rubble from past landslides. After walking for some time, we cross a small suspension bridge and pass through small settlements before reaching Yamphudin. It’s quite an easy day today, as we have a long day ahead of us. Above Yamphudin, facilities are few and far between. We’ve planned well, though, and have plenty of provisions. From Amje Khola, it’s a relentless climb, though the trail is well-maintained. At Chitre, we may see some grazing yaks, a very sweet sight. Continuing, we pass a teeming forest, with draping Spanish moss, which looks like it is out of a movie. There is a little here, and we stop for our quick lunch. Then we continue hiking through the mysterious forest until we break into an opening, cross a suspension bridge, and head on a gentle uphill to Tortong. Overnight in a teahouse.

After walking all the way up to here! why don’t we have an extra day to explore in this untouched and peaceful nature! Yes, we have a full excursion day around Kanchenjunga South Base Camp. We take a packed lunch and set off very early for an up-close encounter with the majestic Kanchenjunga. We follow the valley around its sweeping curve, to the vast southern wall of the mountain. Along this ridge exist the three main summits of Kanchenjunga at 8420 meters, 8586 meters, and 8474 meters. These three summits jut out into the clouds, providing an amazing scene. Keep going towards Oktang, descend onto the glacier and traverse it to a point below Talu, where we get a panoramic view of more pristine mountains. Especially impressive is the eastern part of Khumbakarna Glacier flowing from the east face of Jannu. We then return to our camp at Ramche.

From here we follow the ancient trade market route from India to Tibet! The old Indian generation used to use this route for their business When there was no road connection between Tibet, Nepal, and India. But this trail was not used for a long time after the road development in Nepal, Tibet, and India. Then now, the support of the local people and the government has developed the ancient trail to Ranipul which makes easier and shorter for all the trekkers. We can save several days and skip the long downhill walk to Yamphudin by taking this route to Ranipul. The trail goes a bit up in the beginning and then we walk mostly on the downhill to Ranipul. We have our lunch on the way and head to Ranipul for 4 hours. Walking into the very quiet forest would an amazing moment on our last trekking day on our Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek. Ranipul is a little village nearby the Tamor River. Overnight in a local teahouse.

13-day Kanchenjunga South Base Camp trek and we got Galje as our guide and couldn’t expect anyone better! He was always smiling and was amazing at making suggestions that matched our slower pace like climbing Sunpati Peak on the same day as our KBC south push. He always had some snacks ready for us and also prepared a fresh fruit salad for us every evening, which he carried from Taplejung with him the entire trip, what a guy!! The Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek was such a great experience for us. Thank you so much Kishowr for organizing this trek.

I was looking for a remote area trekking in Nepal. I found the Breeze Adventures menu about it and got in contact with Kishwor (the owner). He suggested the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek. He answered all my questions and also he sent me some photos and videos of the KBC South trek. We had 18 days’ vacation and it was perfect for us. The trail was so peaceful and guest houses were okay for sleep. The food was delicious. We tried lots of local food during our trek. Our guide Sushant was great! He guided us very well and explained in detail about the Limbu culture and the trail and villages. The view from Kanchenjunga South Base Camp was breathtaking! Thank you to our porter for carrying our bag.Thank you Kishwor for this amazing organizing and suggesting us for this amazing Trek. see you in 2025 for the KBC North Camp!

5 Years ago, One of my friends did a trek in Nepal with KishworAdhikari. When I told him my plan to visit Nepal he gave me Kishwor’s company Breeze Adventure contact. I wanted to do a trek on a very peaceful trail in Nepal. He gave me couples of options for peaceful treks in Nepal and I liked more the Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trekking Idea! I would like to thank you again for the Breeze adventure for giving the options with all detailed information. And I thanked myself for choosing this most amazing trekking trail for my holiday in Nepal. The first 4 days walking through the Limbu village, staying at their house, eating with them, and observing their lifestyle from very near was a great experience for me. Kishwor knows most of them and they were very friendly with us. After Yamphudin the trail leads into the wild, crossing little river, and view of JannuHimal was mindblowing. Kishwor took me for a short hike from Cheram and the view of a little pond and Ratlung peak was outstanding. I found that Kishwor knows every corner of Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek. He can tell what can we see from the places. Spending a night at Ramche in the tent by seeing the star and white Himalaya was another surprise for me. The next morning, we walked to Kanchenjunga South Base Camp for a couple of hours. The third Highest Mountain was just in front of me with its family! My eyes and mouth were open for a while until Kishwor start to introduce me with all the beautiful Himalayas. From the starting to the end of my Kanchenjunga South Base Camp trek, I found Breeze Adventure and Kishwor are very friendly, professional, and well experienced in their field. I have already promised to go with them to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp in the future! If you are planning to do any treks in Nepal, Please go with Breeze Adventure for your successful and joyful holiday in Nepal. #Namaste#

What an unforgettable trip to Kanchenjunga South Base Camp! I've done a couple treks in Nepal so far, including the Everest Base Camp Trek, but this one takes the cake. In fact, this 13 day journey may be my favorite trip ever! If you are looking for a quiet trail with staggering views, but don't have time for a full Kanchenjunga Circuit trek, I strongly recommend Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek with Breeze Adventure. The company owner, Kishwor Adhikari was not only super knowledgeable about every single trail in Nepal (including ones I had not read about in my guidebook), but he also proved to be genuinely passionate about us having an awesome time in Nepal. The guide was very professional and knowledgeable as well, and considerate of our comfort. This trek is not very crowded, don't expect any luxurious hotels along the way. The local people were extremely kind! The local beer (Tongba) was a great experience at the end of our trip. I had such an awesome time that I have booked my Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek with Breeze Adventure for 2022! Can’t wait! Thank you Breeze Adventure Team & KIshwor Adhikari for organizing such an unforgettable trip. Namaste! Dal Bhat Power 24 Hour!
