Mojiko Retro
Two train stops from Kokura station, you can visit this charming town—sit on a bench and read or take a walk and enjoy the scenic view, two things that I love to do when I'm here. Perfect place to get some fresh air, whether on a breezy day out or a romantic stroll at night. The architecture here is rather quaint and pretty. You must also try the yaki curry here, the town specialty. It's baked curry with cheese and it's quite a treat. If you've got room after that, enjoy the fresh seafood or a cold one at their local brewery. There are also museums you can check out here after you're done at the plaza. If you go on a weekend, they usually hold events like antique car shows, vintage markets, ramen festivals, oyster fairs—you can consult a local events calendar or, if you're feeling spontaneous, just show up and be pleasantly surprised!
Mojiko Station
Moji was one of five cities that merged to form Kitakyushu City in 1963. It is the closest municipality of Kyushu in proximity to Honshu. Moji Port (門司港, Mojikō) has been prominent as an international trading port since the late 19th century. Today, although main port activities have been moved to a newer location at Shin-Moji Port, Moji Port retains its relevance as a tourist destination with a flavor from the past thanks to several well-preserved Western style buildings from the Meiji and Taisho Periods.

This tour is a good representation of the highlights of the city. Due to our late booking, we missed out on the one with a longer time. I recommend the most time possible. There are so many interesting things to read in the castle and gardens. We dressed in traditional clothing for a photo and played the archery on horseback game. The tea ceremony was great, the tea master and her assistant were so graceful and they had little stools and tables set up so no kneeling was needed, the tea itself was the best I've ever had. The Toto Museum was surprisingly interesting! Unfortunately, the wisteria wasn't in full bloom yet, so we didn't go on that section of the tour. The tanga market we accidentally explored earlier in the day so we could have skipped that, but we were taken to a restaurant/shop that had absolutely incredible faty tuna and norimaki (tiny sushi) made with the high grade tuna. Our guide, Chiharu, was lovely, great energy, very helpful, and tried very hard to make sure we were having a good time. Although a little nervous with her English to begin with by the end she was very confident.

I had a great time! My guide Peko did an amazing job talking about the history and significance of the area. It’s like time traveling to when Japan was just becoming industrialized. You can tell as soon as you step into the train station nearby. If you go on a holiday, make sure to get your fill of blowfish sushi in the fish market.

We had a superb visit of KITAKYUSHU. We were on Azamara Journey and Erica met us at the terminal and took us on a thorough visit of the area by foot and train. What an amazing lady, great knowledge of the area(she is a local) and excellent English (studied in Michigan for a few years). We visited Koruka castle walked Katsuyama park. Got a good idea and feel of Koruka city. Then came back and visited the port of Moji. We were very pleased with our tour! Thanks Erika!
