Instructor Mr. Hara was kind enough to teach me, and even though it was my first time, I was able to play the song with clarity and cherry blossoms. I was very happy to not only experience the koto but also to wear a kimono. I was also able to take many cute photos. At the end, we had a cup of tea and had an origami discussion.

It was such a fantastic experience with Hara-Sensei and learning the Koto in her very traditional style home. The experience was perfect timing, taking only about 3-ish hours, however, it was jam-packed with getting to know more about the finer details of Japanese culture, such as putting on Kimono, trying some wonderful made Japanese Tea, and snacks, making paper cranes, with the main show of playing a beautiful sounding traditional Japanese instrument, the Koto. Hara-Sensei is such a kind teacher, she teaches you slowly, and even with the little you have learned, you play one of the most famous compositions of Japanese musical composition, which is "Sakura". Quite honestly, this is a must experience.

I attended this Koto playing experience with two friends on a rainy afternoon in September. It was located in an old traditional Japanese house in the south of Beppu. As we entered, we were greeted by the teacher who was very kind and eager to communicate regardless of language barriers. The house was decorated with artworks that the teacher had personally collected. My favourite thing about the house was the cat. He was very friendly and also quite vocal. At one point he jumped on my lap as I was playing the Koto. The traditional Japanese tea and sweets after the lesson (prepared by the teacher) were delicious and really added to the atmosphere.

I visited Hara-san with a group of friends. We learned about "Sakura Sakura" songs and the history of the koto. Afterwards, we had the chance to listen to Hara-san play before joining in for a peaceful moment. The experience concluded with tea, conversation, and origami. I highly recommend choosing the kimono option. Hara-san is very kind, and her home and decoration are truly tasteful.
