Sunroad, Kichijoji

We’ll begin with a walk through Sunroad Shopping Street, voted Tokyo residents’ second favorite shopping street in 2022 (just after Ameyoko). Stretching 300 meters and lined with around 150 shops, Sunroad is filled with everyday charm — from cozy cafés and fashion boutiques to long-standing family stores. It’s the perfect place to feel the lively, local rhythm of Kichijoji.

Gesso-ji Temple

Next, we’ll visit Gesso-ji Temple, the heart of Kichijoji’s history and the reason this town was originally formed. We had an amazing tour of Kichijoji with Kate, she is lovely and great tour guide. She knows the area really well and showed all the special places. We loved the local artisan stores and streets and history of the place.

Thanks a lot for a pleasant time. Our guide was friendly and showed us various places in Kichijoji. I especially enjoyed seeing some antique shops. They gathered several fantastic potteries across the country. I felt like I saw something of Japanese culture. Two hours weren’t enough and I’d like to visit again.

There were some shopping streets with a wide variety of small stores with its unique character. I happened to know Tanabata star festival when we visited a small temple. It was a nice experience to write my wish on a tanzaku (a small piece of paper) and hang it up as part of the celebration.

It was a wonderful walking tour to experience local atmosphere in suburban Tokyo. Our guide provided us with interesting stories about Kichijoji ranging from a great earthquake that triggered the creation of this city 350 years ago to recent trends of many retail stores we visited.

Michi is a fantastic guide teaching us a lot of interesting stories around Kichijoji. Kichijoji is a really hidden Gem in Tokyo. It is easily understand why Kichijoji is chosen as the most attractive town to live in Tokyo. Nice shops, restaurants and cultural facilities there are. After visiting the main tourist attractions, you should come here to experience nice daily life in Tokyo.

I joined the tour to learn the secret of Kichijoji's popularity. After learning about the history of Kichijoji, we set out for walking. We enjoyed strolling around, paying a visit to various types of stores, some long-established, some newcomers. Closing with a drink and yakitori skewers at a cosy isakaya was very nice. On the tour I learned: 1. Kichijoji is a town of jazz and animation; 2. you should visit Kichijoji on a weekday. Very thankful to my charming guide, Ms. Kawasaki!
