What To Expect

Mazatlan’s center is buzzing with activity at all times of the day. It’s the place where locals go to get their groceries and fresh produce. Steeped in culture, you will learn all about this amazing neighborhood and its beginnings (there was once a bullfight ring!). Spend a morning meandering the Mercado and surrounding streets, satisfying your curiosity and appetite. The Flavor Teller loves to share their own Mazatlan stories, while you eat, drink and meet new friends. This guided walk is all about getting to know the neighborhood (and its local people) through food. Get the scoop on Mazatlan’s multicultural spirit at downtown’s favorite meeting place. Visit the market's fruit, vegetables and dried chile stands. You'll try some typical delicacies on the way – smoked marlin and a variety of Mexican cheeses. Discover the other side of Mazatlan’s market and find out how Mexican families cure their ailments. Taste Mazatlan’s typical tostadas, at a family-run diner that has been in business for three decades and enjoy an authentic ‘torta’ (grilled sandwich roll), washed down with a local soda. We finish the tour enjoying a variety of traditional Mexican ice creams.

Learn about the history of the town and the market before trying some local dishes I never would have encountered on my own. A really great afternoon and way to absorb some local culture!

Had been to Mazatlan previously and did a few tourist things. Wanted to try something a bit different. This was just perfect. Gives you some history of Mazatlan as walking through the streets and some great eats at the market. We would have never tried this food our own. And boy was it fantastic. As was our guide Luis!! Very knowledgeable, kind and will answer any questions you may have. The small group setting is really nice. Also to mention my husband has a gluten allergy, i emailed first and it could be accommodated. We did ask at each meal just to be extra cautious and it was all good! We actually went back a couple days later and had lunch at the market. Also took some to go smoked Marlin! Yummy!! This is a 3 hour tour we took a didi ( like uber so cost effective) from our hotel. I would highly recommend doing this!

We had an amazing time on our food tour with Luis. His knowledge of the Mercado and the area was great. When they tell you to come hungry, they mean it. We sampled many items, most of which we would not have tried on our own as we wouldn't know if we would be ok eating from some of those restaurants/market stalls. The items were not sample size, but full size. We got to see many parts of the market and learned about the vendors and their history. We enjoy going to markets and local foods, so this tour was perfect for us. Hopefully we'll get back there someday and can take another tour with Flavor Teller!

We did two different food tours with Flavor Teller. Both were fantastic experiences. Maaike has excellent knowledge of the markets and the historical area. She has established great relationships with the local vendors. She is incredibly fluent from English to Spanish, so there was no problems with any language barrier. She ensured that we were safe and taken care of in the busy markets. Money well spent, for recipes and stories to bring home to your family and friends!

  • Wendy was wonderful! Lots of food!

Be prepared to eat and come hungry! We came off a cruise ship and meeting point very close to the port. The company is great and Maaike was nice to talk to on phone and reassured us they get many cruise passengers and we would make it to meeting point on time (we did). Wendy was our tour guide and super knowledgeable of Mazatlán’s history and food. My husband and I had been to Mazatlan many times before via cruises and this port was not a favorite. But Wendy changed that for us and now we can’t wait to go back! We went to many food stalls in the market from tamales to juices, ceviche, fruit salad, tortas, and gelato. And they were all full size, not samplers, and all so good! Plus Wendy showed us the different parts of the market from the chilis to seafood to butchers. I highly recommend to not eat before this tour or only eat half of what is given so you can enjoy all the wonderful food provided!
