  • Fantastic sites but tour was a bit disappointing

Firstly, we had an outstanding tour of Old San Juan from a different group. However, this one was a bit disappointing. We were 4 adults and the tour started well in San Cristobal. It was a good historical narrative initially, although with a couple of factual errors. When we reached El Morro, there was really no tour. Our guide would go to various locations to let us enjoy the view but did not say anything to the group. If you asked a question, you got a reply, but again there were factual errors. When I asked about history or narration, I was told "That's all you get for a 3 hr tour". That was absolutely not what I expected. On a separate note, when we got to San Cristobal, we had to pay $10 each in cash on top of the tour price (about $40 each) which was disclosed ahead of time. This is the standard price for a ticket to the two forts, valid for 5 days. At the end of the first castle visit, my wife want feeling well and was not up to going to El Morro so I requested our tickets so we could come back with her later to explore on our own. The guide got quite upset and refused to give the tickets. At the least, this needs to be disclosed ahead of time. It was not a cheap tour but this withholding tickets felt like nickel and diming. He offered to refund us $20 but that never happened. Questionable statements: 1. He said if PR became a state, it would have 4 senators. Later when we questioned it, he said he was talking about it together with Washington DC. 2. When we stood next to a cannon in San Cristobal, he said it was a Dutch cannon, although there was a sign next to it saying it was Swedish. When asked later, it didn't seem important to him. 3. At El Morro, he sounded like the bay was 10ft deep and they have to keep dredging it. But maybe he was only talking about the opening... Overall, I believe the tour would be more worthwhile if there was some narrative at both forts, and this refusal to give tickets made no sense - disclose ahead and be a bit considerate.

Uncle J is a wealth of history knowledge. He gave us so much education of the origin of the castles and the development of Puerto Rico. It was about a 3 hour tour most time being spent at San Cristobal. The early start was great to avoid lots of people. El Morro was more crowded but still great views!

The tour guide started out with loads of history. He asked questions of specific people in the group about our knowledge of history and was quite condescending with our answers or lack thereof. He seemed not to care when we lost 2 families of the group early on. After we toured the 2 Castles, we basically just walked through Old Town; he didn't say anything most of that time. I mean, it was fairly interesting, but certainly not worth $49.

  • Great walking tour of both forts!

  • Bad experience

We were charged full price even tho both castles/forts were closed for the day. And it seemed that in order to fill the time, he droned on and on with Island facts and trivia, some of which was incorrect. He spoke disrespectfully of me to my daughter when we checked in. It was just downright unenjoyable.
