What To Expect

1

Otaru Canal

The Otaru Canal is a classic staple when it comes to famous sightseeing spots of Hokkaido. Once the distribution hub of Hokkaido, it boasted a population that even surpassed that of Sapporo. At that time the canal was used to offload ships via barges, and was established to lengthen the distance that goods could be distributed. Eventually the canal was no longer necessary to serve its function once the docks were established and was to be landfilled. However it currently stands as a place for citizens and tourists alike to relax and enjoy with its promenades and gas lamps lighting the riverbanks.

Otaru Art Base

Otaru City's historical buildings of the early 20th century are now used as various resources for tourism. The Otaru Art Base located opposite the Otaru Canal across Rinkosen Street is one such facility. There are four historical buildings where 20 of the largest banks in Hokkaido were gathered, formerly the center of Hokkaido's economy known as "North Wall Street." What was the former Hokkaido Takushoku Bank Otaru Branch as seen in the picture is now home to the Nitori Museum of Art, and includes displays such as Japanese and foreign paintings, wood carvings, and more. In the basement you will find the Art Nouveau Art Déco Glass Gallery.

  • Wonderful, memorable tour with expert local guide

My guide Akira was excellent. Informative, understanding, patient, and helpful. He tailored the tour to my interests and let me set the pace. He didn't talk too much; rather, he let me ask questions so that he could speak on topics of interest to me. As a first-time visitor to Japan and Otaru, I could have never figured out the logistics and navigated so efficiently through the city. His English was strong and we conversed easily on subject ranging from history to sports to movies. He also translated my interactions with shop owners. Finally, he accomodated my special request to visit a local coffeehouse. A wonderful, memorable experience!

  • An insider's tour of Otaru

My guide Akira was knowledgeable, kind, patient, and understanding. He didn't talk too much; rather, he let me ask questions so that he only spoke on topics of interest to me. He also allowed me to set the pace, and we covered a lot of ground in six hours, from the fish market to Mt. Tengu to a coffeehouse to even the Don Quijote discount store (at my request). Being a first-time visitor to Japan and Otaru, I could have never figured out how to manage the logistics and cover so much ground so efficiently. He coordinated bus travel and translated for me at shops. He was very conversant in Enlish on a number of subjects ranging from history to movies. A memorable day with a truly expert guide!

  • Kumiko was amazing!!!

Where to start! Kumiko was an absolutely wonderful tour guide, so very friendly and knowledgeable of the city of Otaru! Literally every aspect of the tour was delightful. The King Crab luncheon was absolutely delicious (best crab I've ever eaten), the museums were very interesting, it was quite neat learning about the herring based history of the city. The shopping district came next, and was a bunch of fun to wander through. Here, Kumiko was delightful as she just allowed us visit the stores we wanted to, at no point did she ever seem to rush us, and she even visited a few with us to give us some advice. We finished up at the Tanaka Sake Brewery, and yet again, Kumiko's information was great, having her guide us through the brewing process was very interesting, we got to see some active work being done, then the tasting was AWESOME. All of the different flavor profiles truly made it an experience we will never forget. All in all, wonderful day, wonderful tour, if you get Kumiko, you are going to have a wonderful time!

We visit Otaru because it was a cruise stop. There is no much to see there, but the guide was so professional that she took care of us in order to see all we told her previously we were interested. My congratulations for a person that takes her job with such responsability.

Our guide, Kate was very informative and knew the best places to take us as we visited during winter. It was very cold, windy and icy, but she managed to get us around safely.

  • Wonderful Otaru Private Tour with Akiko!

Akiko was an absolute gem! From the moment I booked, she was incredibly communicative and ensured I saw all the key sights I was interested in. The highlight was definitely the unexpected seafood lunch. Akiko seamlessly adjusted the tour to include a delicious feast of king crab and horsehair crab, which was an unforgettable experience. Beyond the incredible food, Akiko was a fantastic guide. She shared fascinating insights into Hokkaido and Japanese culture, making the tour both informative and entertaining. I particularly enjoyed our visit to the sake brewery, where Akiko expertly explained the intricate process of sake making. It was fascinating to see the brewery in action. The Canal was also breathtaking, especially with the fresh snow dusting the old warehouses. Akiko was so down-to-earth and understanding when I was a little too ambitious with the food! I was eager to try the sea urchin, but I simply couldn't fit another full plate. Akiko kindly offered me some of her own, which was incredibly generous and delicious. I highly recommend this tour with Akiko. She's knowledgeable, friendly, and goes the extra mile to make your experience truly special.

Had a good outing with Michiko! She is a fantastic guide. Appreciate all her efforts and help! Her guidance and arrangement in getting us back to Sapporo station after our train from Otaru was cancelled due to some fatal incident was most helpful.
