Originating in Shetland the breed was a packing pony and are now found all over the world, used as popular riding ponies for children and a companion to horses. Carol the stud owner will explain all in her talk about these beautiful creatures, remember they have teeth and may assume fingers for carrots! So please do not feed the ponies.

What To Expect

Scalloway

We start with a brief photostop overlooking the village of Scalloway, Shetland's former capital. We will continue into the village where you will have a chance to photograph Scalloway Castle (you are not able to enter the castle as it is not open to visitors) and the Shetland Bus Memorial.

Carol knows EVERYTHING about Shetland ponies and it was fun to learn from her and pet the ponies. The ride to and from is more like a taxi ride than a tour. The driver was very sweet but didn’t give us much information about the town or countryside we drove thru. We saw in town that rides to the ponies were available for significantly less money, but I don’t think they included Carol’s presentation which was the highlight for sure.

This was very informative on the history of the Shetland Ponies. Carol provided about 10 ponies to show and discuss with our tour. The ponies were well-behaved and allowed to be petted.

Driver was pleasant and informative. The van was comfortable. The ponies were adorable. It was just the two of us so the interaction we had with the driver was more like pleasant conversation than a tour.
