We had a day in Joburg, South Africa before joining up with our safari group. In concern for our safety, our hotel (Garden Court Sandton City) set us up with Desmond, a private tour guide with Thuthukani Sandile. Deftly maneuvering traffic, he gave us a rundown on colonial history and resistance and apartheid, weaving personal and cultural stories infused with song and wry humor. He showed us a Joburg of contrasts: wealthy hilltop homes, shanty shacks, downtown office buildings now home to squatters. On the way from Constitution Hill and Mandela House, we saw long queues waiting for school uniforms, pop-up barbers and tailors, and grilled corn stands. This Dickensian collage swirled around us and we heard all about it in Desmond’s deep and wonderful voice describing a world of “2-legged hyenas” and “Johnny Walkers”. Unforgettable.

Five Star Tour! The tour was very thorough and the tour guide, MK, was fun, high energy, accommodating, patient, and highly informative. We got the "real" tour of Johannesburg and Soweto.
