A remarkable archaeological site that provides a window into the ancient Roman history of Budapest. Located near the ruins of the Aquincum military camp, this ancient amphitheater once served as a center for entertainment and social gatherings during the Roman Empire. Built in the 2nd century AD, it could accommodate thousands of spectators who came to witness gladiatorial contests, theatrical performances, and other public spectacles.

When we booked this, I guess I didn't realize this was a private tour with only my husband and myself. We met Zoltan near the newly renovated Opera House and immediately knew we were in good hands. We started talking about all kinds of things, Budapest, the history of the city, the current politics, how to pronounce certain foods we would try and where certain foods came from. We just hit it off. We stopped at a street cafe to have strudel and opted for the traditional Hungarian flavors - which were delicious. We were talking so much I forgot to take pictures of our food - thank goodness Zoltan did. :). We walked through interesting historic sections of the city like the Holocaust Memorial, saw the American Embassy and got a picture with a bronze statue of George W. Bush. We wandered through the main plaza and stopped neat St. Stephens Basilica for lunch which included Gulyás the "cowboy" soup and Langos, which we had never had. All good and very flavorful. As we ate, the church chimed out noon bells - really incredible. Without making this too long, we also tried a chimney cake and ended at a small Bistro with 3 different Hungarian wines. All good. Needless to say we were happily stuffed and educated at the same time! We are still talking about Zoltan and the wonderful experience in Budapest. If you only do one food tour - treat yourself to this one.

Fantastic food tour with Kitti. She gave us interesting information as we walked between food stops. The food choices were both delicious and interesting. We stopped in places that we would have never found on our own. Very good overview of Budapest. It was like taking a tour with a friend. I highly recommend Secret Food Tours and especially Kitti!

  • A Must-Do Local Experience in Budapest

The Óbuda food tour with Zoltán is an absolute must! This was one of the most authentic and memorable experiences we had in Budapest. Instead of joining a touristy tour in the crowded city center, we explored where the locals actually eat and it was incredible. We visited multiple restaurants, a bakery, and even a local butcher/meat market. Every stop offered fantastic food and a true glimpse into daily Hungarian life. Zoltán knew all the best hidden gems and made the experience feel like exploring with a knowledgeable local friend. Between stops, he shared fascinating stories about Óbuda’s history and culture, pointing out historical sites along the way and explaining their background in an engaging way. He also gave us an honest and insightful look into local life including the traditions, the challenges, and the everyday beauty of living in this part of Budapest. Zoltán’s warmth, humor, and storytelling made Óbuda come alive. Skip the downtown tours if you want to truly taste and experience Budapest, this tour is the one to do. Óbuda with Zoltán is pure magic

Zoltan was our guide and he was terrific with historic and current stories about Hungary as he would put it, “a small country with a big ego”. We had four tastes, excellent strudel and coffee, langos, the BEST goulash soup and ending with a hidden speak easy that served numerous cheeses, meat and sausages along with copious beers and palinkas. Loved it.

As part of a city trip to Budapest, my friends and I once again booked a food tour. Our guide was Gyorgy, who gave us interesting and entertaining hours and took us on a lovely culinary trip through “(Buda)-Pest”. It was unanimously the best food tour we have ever done. Thank you very much Gyorgy!
