Gutmanis Cave
Gutmanala is the largest grotto in the Baltic States and is known as a cult place. Up until the 19th century, people would come here to make their offerings to the deities. Cave is also known for inscriptions on its walls, some of them dating back to 1668 and 1677. It is 10 meters high, 12 meters wide and 18.8 meters deep.
Turaida Castle
Turaida Castle is a symbol of Sigulda. The building of the castle began in 1214, under the direction of Albert, Bishop of Riga. Periodically the archbishop`s estate and property, including Turaida, were governed by Livonian Order. Throughout history, many battles took place there and the castle had several owners until the 17th century when it lost its military significance and became a private property. Today it is the most visited museum in Latvia. Castle is located on the edge of Gauja valley offering a stunning view from the top floor of the Main Tower.

We took a private tour by car with Maria to the Gauja nature reserve which included Sigulda Livonian Order Castle, Krimulda Manor and Turaida Museum Reserve. Maria was lovely, very knowledgeable and informative. She stopped to let us shop in the local craft shops and was very patient. The scenery was stunning and is well worth doing. It was lovely to get out of Riga and see the beautiful green countryside.

We loved our day visit to Sigulda. It was around an hour by train from Riga. Such a pretty town, spotlessly clean and very quiet in Feb but plenty to see and do. The Lutheran Church looked a picture infront of the frozen pond with clear blue skies above. The Livonian Castle was interesting with great views across the valley to Krimulda Manor and Turaida Castle. Plenty of places to get lunch and a drink. One of the prettiest railway stations I have seen and lovely and warm whilst we waited for the train home. If you want to go outside of Riga this is a great choice.
