What To Expect

"If you live in Rome do what the romans do". If you are in Hungary taste what the locals taste. Did you know that Hungary is considered to be wine drinking nation (rather than beer)? You will have a chance to taste 6 +1 indigenous Hungarian white wines, such as the "Unpronounceable Grape" called Cserszegi fűszeres, Hárslevelű or probably our best known grape Furmint, which is the basic grape of Tokaji Aszú. Among the red you can taste Kékfrankos, Kadarka and Bull's Blood. Besides tasting these wine I will tell you the history of winemaking in Hungary. As a wine journalist and wine judge I know a lot of wine makers in personal. I will also tell some funny stories regarding their wines which we taste. Also do not forget that most of the wines can be only tasted or bought in Michelin star restaurants and top hotels in Budapest.

The wine tasting with Miki was a highlight of my time in Budapest. Miki is incredibly knowledgeable and generous with his time. I learned so much and the wine was seriously excellent. There are delicious local snacks also to accompany the wine. It was genuinely special and I highly recommend. The wine was so good, I visited again the next day to sample some more before I left Budapest and buy some to take home. The bar is very cosy and friendly.

I have done my fair share of wine tastings, but this was the best. It felt like the culmination of someone’s life work. The sum of their learning and experience being shared with storytelling flair, and a pride and passion in the wines they are sharing and presenting. I knew nothing about Hungarian wines, so was keen to start our holiday by trying some, I was blown away by what I learned at Wine the Gap in Budapest. The space itself has character and a relaxing place to sit and enjoy a wine and and chat. Miki, a wine journalist, storyteller, and walking encyclopaedia and atlas of Hungarian terroir isn’t here to just pour wine, he grounds it and contextualises it - not delivering a rote learned tasting notes - but knows his stuff and engages you by being engaging. You get information about geology, climate, wine history, winemaker knowledge - most of whom he knows personally and then, somewhere in the middle of the a sentence and a story, he casually pours something exceptional and on the evening rolls. You’ll also get some delicious snacks to try. We started bright and aromatic with Csereszegi Fűszeres from Gál - you’re getting elderflower, citrus peel and soft spice. A grape that feels like Hungary’s answer to Gewürztraminer, but lighter on its feet, a balanced nose and palate that really makes you stand up and take notice - these are good wines. From there, the Szent Márton Rosé carried that clean, mineral freshness — red berries, a little wild strawberry, perfect acidity keeping everything conversational, sunshine and food-friendly. This was the best Rosé I can remember having. Tokaj made its appearance (as it must) with Apukám Bora Furmint - wines from Tokaj are religiously harvested and made. The structure of this wine with green apple, quince, volcanic salinity. The kind of wine shows Tokaj isn’t just about sweetness — the right about of dryness in the Furmint shows backbone and depth. Then we moved onto reds. Kadarka Classic from Pastor Garage in Szekszárd, a light, almost Pinot-like in colour but packed with spice: paprika, sour cherry, a little earth. Light tannin but memorable. Followed by the Bikavér Reserve, a bigger, fuller red. Darker fruit flavours, bit of pepper, layered oak. Structured acidity and lift. By the end of this one I was sure I loved Hungarian wines. And finally, the Szamorodni Édes 2014 from Tokaj-Tállya. Honeyed apricot, mild marmalade, botrytis richness — but not overly sweet or heavy. Sweetness balanced by a volcanic spine Tokaj that I learned Tokaj is famous for. What made the night though wasn’t just the wines Miki decided to share with us, it was his generosity of sharing his knowledge. Miki pours like someone who wants you to understand what makes the wines in Hungary special and great, not just trying to flog a few bottles to gullible visitors. You leave feeling like you’ve travelled some of the vineyard roads, stood among the vines, seen some insights into what makes these winemakers tick, and all from a humble little wine bar in the city of Budapest. I am so grateful for the hospitality, the conversation, and the education. I am excited to share the wines we purchased and brought home with people I care about. If you like wine, and like learning more about it and expanding your understanding of it and of Hungarian wines specifically, please book in for a tasting at Wine the Gap. It is not just a clever name, it’s a very clever host and a great experience.

We loved our tasting! It was small and extremely perisonalble. We’ve done wine tastings in Spain, france, and Napa and this one felt more special it truely felt like we were sitting around with friends instead of some random tour. 10/10, highly recommend.

  • Brilliant evening of wine tasting

We had such a brilliant evening tasting 8 wines (with nibbles) with host Miki, over 2.5 hours! It was just the two of us, but he was a tremendous guide to a superb selection of Hungarian wines. We’ve done wine tours and tastings in Napa, Sonoma, Santa Barbara, Willamette Valley, Barolo, Porto and other world wine regions — and this was one of our favourite evenings! Miki is charming and engaging, and knows so much about Hungarian wines — we learned so much! The wines were excellent and expertly chosen. The accompanying nibbles were high quality and just enough to keep hunger at bay. A must if you’re a wine enthusiast — we looked at several wine tasting options in Budapest and were so glad we selected this one. Miki’s knowledge and experience was very impressive and enthusiastically shared. Our only regret was not being able to buy any to take back (carry on luggage only, ugh). Definitely one of our favourite things we did on our trip to Budapest, would highly recommend.

  • Very Valuable Introduction to Hungarian Wines

This is a great experience. Miklós (or as his friends call him Mickie) is a very passionate and knowledgeable evangelist for Hungarian wine. He’s been in the business for 25 years and has seemingly traveled all throughout his country to source and share the best that Hungarian has to offer. He personally knows many of the best wine producers and it’s difficult to find elsewhere such a sample of great Hungarian wines from the reds of Villány to the sweet whites of Tokaj. The snacks are excellent and plentiful as well - Hungarian cheeses, meats, and breads. And Mickie is the star of the show with his knowledge, humor, and wit. Great experience all around.
