Due to the immense popularity the Bio Bay tour, at times can get crowded. It’s not uncommon to meet up with other tour groups waiting to access the canal leading to the lagoon. There can be bumping other kayaks along the way. When crowded conditions warrant, Pure Adventure will provide extra guides for your safety.
Please keep in mind that this tour takes place in a natural environment and that the bioluminescent phenomenon, although rare, can be seen year round. The intensity of brightness is unpredictable and can vary from minimal no very bright suddenly.
In order to best appreciate the bioluminescent phenomena our tours run at sunset and early evening and it can get quite dark in the mangrove canal. So, if you are afraid of darkness, a first time kayaker, or have small kids we strongly suggest taking the earlier, sunset trip. This way you can see where you are going, get use to the environment and sharpen your kayaking skills
Our offices are closed on SUNDAYS - Reservations made Saturday after 5 pm will not be revised until Monday at 9 am. For cancellations request during this time please send us a message through Viator.
SPECIAL NOTE: We encourage our guests to not reserve the tour on the same day of arrival to the Island. If the FLIGHT or FERRY is delayed and the guest misses the tour the guest will not be entitled to a refund or rescheduling.
TOUR TIME might change depending on sunset time. If so we will send a reminder for updated meeting time.
This tour takes place in the water. Expect to get completely wet. Wear clothes and shoes that can get wet. We recommend to bring a change of clothes and towel for after the trip.
Tour is not canceled in rainy days. We will get wet anyways ;)
It is the guest responsibility to read and comply with health and weight requirements. Ignorance of the requirements is not accepted as an excuse.
There are public bathrooms on-site, but they are not always in good condition. You may consider stopping in fast food before getting to the meeting site or using the bathrooms from the nearby stores/restaurants which are sometimes available.
Certain time of the year great amounts of sargassum (seaweed) arrive to our coasts. This can make paddling to feel like a workout. Also the natural decomposition odor might be unpleasant.

Kids and parents both had fun. It was a well run operation. It was safe and educational. I wouldn’t hesitate to book it again.

We really didn’t get to see much luminescence unfortunately other than under the tarp. We still had a great time despite that! Javier was on his second day as a tour guide and he did an awesome job helping my daughter and I who were struggling a bit. He was so patient and even gave my daughter a flower!

Our family of 6 (young adults and middle aged adults) enjoyed the Bio Bay tour very much. It was well organized and we felt safe with the guides. There was safe and adequate parking at the site. This was our second Bio Bay tour and although this one wasn't as bright and active as previous, it was still an amazing experience. The tour with safety briefing and snacks afterwards lasted about 2 hours total. There were many other tours at the same time so it is important to stay together as a group. I had emailed a few times prior for the actual weight limit as one place states 220 and one place states 240 pounds. The weight limit is 240 pounds and they do weigh on site and are strict about the weight limit. Great time. highly recommend.

Navigating in the dark is a bit challenging. Guides assist but did leave someone behind. We took the earlier shift; I suspect later has a more dramatic impact with full darkness—you need to swish your hands in the water between kayaks to see bioluminescence.

While we did see bioluminescence we only had about 5 minutes to look at it before having to head back. The ratio of time with the luminescence to the amount of time spent kayaking/just sitting in the lagoon was not worth the cost. On top of that, a group of 20 teenagers on a field trip were included in our tour. They were loud and engaging in tons of horseplay. No one did anything to reign in their behavior or noise level which ruined the experience for us. Overall, incredibly disappointing and I wish we'd gone with one of the other companies on the lagoon that night, all of which were well-behaved and quiet and spent more time on the water than we did.

It's a workout but it was beautiful. Very little bioluminescent activity but still a worthwhile event.
