The tour begins base nearby the Mýrdalsjökull glacier in South Iceland. We start by going over the tour plan and safety instructions. From the base we cross some small rivers and head down to the black lava sands fields which derives from the dormant volcano Katla. Down by the black beach we stop and enjoy the amazing view up to the Mýrdalsjökull glacier and along the coast to the southernmost part of Iceland, the small peninsula Dyrhólaey. We then head along the coast to the famous aircraft wreck, from there we continue to the river Jökulsá and up to the foot of the mountain. Upon our return we follow the mountain back to the base. The ATV experience itself lasts approximately 2 hours. You will ride 2 people per ATV, with one driving and one as a passenger. If you are traveling alone, or in an odd-numbered group (3, 5, 7 etc.) there is an additional charge payable locally for single riders. The adventure will provide stunning photo opportunities in good weather, so don't forget to bring your camera! You will be provided with everything you need for a safe and comfortable ride. No ATV experience is required to take part and the skill level for this activity is deemed as 'easy'.

It was a very nice experience. Our guide jordy gave us a full detailed history of the places as well. We drove really fast and through the rivers as well which was thrilling. We visited not only the plane wreck but also the black sand beach and a canyon which was really amazing

The ATV tour is very fun and exciting. The 2 hour trip will take you around some of the most scenic places in iceland. Traversing through black sand beach and sand dunes is something you will never forget. The overall management is very nice and friendly. Our tour guide, Jordy, is an amazing person. He was very friendly, helpful, thorough and made sure to share with us all the fun facts and historical details of the sites we were visiting. Full 5 stars for Jordy.

Jordy was amazing!! He was thorough and professional explaining the ATVs which made everyone feel comfortable on the tour. We saw the black sand beach, plane and even saw a mystical ravine behind a forest off the beaten path. He explained the geological relevance, potential dangers, volcanic history and sprinkled in some local folk lore! The tour was paced appropriately so while you embraced the exhilaration of the atv, you could also appreciate the breathtaking views. 5/5! Highly recommend the tour and Jordy!!

We chose the buggy option for this tour. You can ride on either a two person quad (single or double) or a buggy (two or four seat sided by sides). Before starting, you are outfitted with full body waterproof overalls, high waterproof boots, balaclava, knit gloves and a motorcycle helmet. The gear was cleanly laundered. You need not worry about wearing your own waterproof gear. Despite it being 40’s and raining, my group was plenty warm. The side by sides seemed well maintained. The drive was thrilling and fantastic. You go at top speed (around 62 km) through a course onto a black sand beech. The best parts were fording streams at speed and coursing through the equivalent of a slalom course cut into back sand dunes. I imagine it was a bit like a mini Dakar Rally. There are three stops on the trip: a black sand beach, the plane crash site and a valley basin. Great photo opportunities. Our guide, Jokdy, was the best. Unlike other side by side tours that we have taken that have been a bit of a snooze fest, Jokdy did not hold back.

Had an amazing experience with Icelandic Mountain Guides! Our guide, Hinrik, made the whole adventure unforgettable. He was not only incredibly knowledgeable about the area, but also brought a great sense of fun and energy to the trip. You can tell he genuinely loves what he does, and it made all the difference. Highly recommend this company—especially if you get Hinrik as your guide!
