This first modern pottery establishment in Rwanda offers visitors a unique chance to connect with the once marginalized but now forward-looking Batwa community—Rwanda’s indigenous people. Your hosts warmly introduce their rich history and culture, preparing you for an authentic, hands-on experience. You’ll get your hands in the clay, mixing and shaping it into beautiful pottery, then witness the traditional firing in a rustic kiln, feeling the deep connection to centuries-old craft. Founded by the wives of Gatagara potters, Urumuri Cooperative is a spirited women-led group that brings together pottery and performing arts. Upon arrival, you are welcomed with the rhythmic beat of drums, joyful dancing, and warm smiles. The women proudly share their skills and stories, offering a deeply personal encounter with Rwanda’s living heritage.
