Last year, june 2024, I had the pleasure of visiting Samburu National Reserve and was truly blown away by how unique and special this park is. Unlike the more popular parks like Masai Mara, Samburu offers a more intimate safari experience, with fewer crowds and a dramatic, semi-arid landscape that creates a stunning backdrop for wildlife viewing. The highlight for me was seeing the Samburu Special Five—Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, gerenuk, and Beisa oryx. Our guide, part of team at Skyward Safari Adventures was incredibly knowledgeable and helped us spot elusive leopards, lions, and even a herd of elephants by the Ewaso Nyiro River. We stayed at Sarova Shaba Game lodge, a beautiful lodge with exceptional service, and delicious meals. The peace and quiet made it perfect for relaxation between game drives. Tips for travelers: 1. If traveling with kids, ask for accommodations with pools or nature walks. 2. Early morning and evening game drives offer the best sightings. 3. Combine Samburu with visits to Ol Pejeta or Lake Naivasha for a well-rounded trip. 4. If you're looking for something off the beaten path with excellent wildlife and fewer tourists, Samburu is a must. And I highly recommend traveling with a trusted operator like Skyward Safari Adventures—professional, flexible, and no hidden costs. Don’t forget your camera—the landscapes and sunsets are absolutely breathtaking!
