Papamoa Hills Cultural Heritage Regional Park

Leaving the beach, you will travel a short distance along the coast to the Pāpāmoa Hills. With a height of 224 metres at the summit, the hills make up the end of the Otawa range that runs from the Mamaku Plateau out to the coast. This walk consists of a one hour (approx.) return walk across rolling farmland out to the end of the hills where you will get sweeping views along the Bay of Plenty coastline and across the city of Tauranga. The area is one of the most significant historical and archaeological sites in New Zealand. First settled by Māori around 1400AD there are the remains of several Pā (Village) across the site dating back to 1650AD.

Great value! We met our guide Robert right outside cruise gates and drove in small van to our first stop where we hiked up a hill to see beautiful views of bay and countryside. We are in late 50s and had no trouble. 2nd stop was McLaren Falls where we had a chance to have lunch at cafe followed by beautiful flat riverside trail walk amid giant ferns and cedars. Robert gave great info and made for fun active day. Highly recommend!

Our guide was very knowledgeable and gave us lots of useful information. We had plenty of opportunities to take photos of the beautiful scenery. We drove to gardens and a kiwi plantation where we tasted the yellow and green varieties.
