Swakopmund Jetty
Swakopmund is a coastal city in Namibia, west of the capital, Windhoek. Its sandy beaches face the Atlantic Ocean. Established by German colonists in 1892, the city’s colonial landmarks include the Swakopmund Lighthouse and the Mole, an old sea wall. Next to the lighthouse, the Swakopmund Museum documents Namibian history. Inland, the elegant Swakopmund Railway Station, now a hotel, also dates to the colonial era.
Swakopmund Museum
Swakopmund is one of those great traveller way stations along the African road. At once Namibia's adventure capital and a surreal colonial remnant, part destination in its own right and part launch pad for an exploration of the Skeleton Coast and Namib Desert, this is a city with as much personality as it has sea frontage. Like Lüderitz on the south coast, with its half-timbered German architecture, seaside promenades and pervasive Gemütlichkeit (a distinctively German appreciation of comfort and hospitality), Swakopmund, especially out of season, can feel like a holiday town along Germany’s North Sea and Baltic coasts transplanted onto African soil. But the city is also thoroughly African and its multidimensional appeal means that most people end up staying longer than they planned.

I was looking for a tour that showed the true heart and soul of life in Namibia. By chance, I came across Explorer Tours and the Township Cultural Experience - and they delivered with their Township of Mondesa. Swakopmund becomes a ghost town at night and is pretty empty during the day. I couldn't work out where all the people were. Well, they live in Mondesa a short drive outside of Swakopmund. My local guides Nico and Vaino drove and walked me round this vast township. I wanted to make clear this is not a depressing tour. As with all towns there are those that have and those that have not. Yes, there was poverty, but for the most part 95% was a positive, vibrant and engaging place. We visited a buzzing market area, the Dantago Arts Group where I had a lesson in the local click language and a herbology class. Onwards with a history lesson and then for the first time in Namibia authentic local dishes/cuisine (hard to come by). The tour finished with wonderful singing from choir Rivonia. Best tour of my trip.

An experience that you can’t understand until you don’t live it. Nande (our guide) came to our hotel and bring us to the township by is own. First we visited a topical market and than we reached a community center were we had the possibility to talk to this people. After visiting some of the main place and listened to the story of this township Nande took us to is own place were we had a tipical lunch all together. In the end this has probably been the best experience in Namibia by now and I really recommend it.

You can't say that you've been in Namibia if you haven't visited a township. The tour lets you immerse yourself in this culture leaving you speechless. Unlike the mainstream tours where you only drive through the township without having contact with the people, in this tour you really feel how the life in the township is or at least get an idea of it. This wonderful people welcome you singing and dancing typical Namibian songs and you can't but get involved in this amazing atmosphere. Moreover, if all this wasn't enough, you get the chance to eat a typical Namibian lunch by the tour guide's home. Really tasty!!! In the end, I would really like to tell you something about Nande. He is not only a very professional person but also tells you all the story of the township in a very accurate and easy to understand way. Moreover he is extremely friendly and lovely. A must-do in Swakopmund!!
