Nõmme is often called Tallinn’s “garden city.” The atmosphere here is tranquil and almost village-like, evoking nostalgia for the good old days when the skies were bluer and the grass was greener. Mustamäe is defined by its Soviet-era architecture and functional urban planning. Built mainly in the 1960s and 1970s, this district was designed as a “micro-district” to house a rapidly growing urban population. Mustamäe’s streets are lined with blocks of utilitarian apartment buildings—practical and uniform—which tell the story of Estonia’s recent history under Soviet rule.
