Canterbury
As you leave the Canterbury city centre, you will stop briefly by the second of the city's most important UNESCO World Heritage landmarks - St Augustine's Abbey. Founded shortly after St Augustine arrived in Kent in AD597 to convert the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity, the abbey was a residence for Augustine and his brother monks and functioned as a monastery. It was also a ‘missionary school’ where classical knowledge and English learning flourished. Among its library of illuminated manuscripts, only 150 survived the English Reformation and the dissolution of the Monasteries in 1538. One of these – the ‘Canterbury Gospels’ – survived from AD597 and was used in the recent Coronation of King Charles III.

A great afternoon in Canterbury and the wider Kent countryside (including Dover). Anthony is an extremely knowledgable and personable guide - he goes out of his way to make the trip equally memorable and informative. Highly, highly recommended….

If you are interested not only in the city of Canterbury, but in the county of Kent and it's history, this is the trip for you! Anthony is a superb guide to the area of Kent, from the white cliffs of Dover to the streets of Canterbury. This trip takes you beyond the typical "walking tour" of Canterbury through several beautiful small villages of Kent--and on to a tour of the WWII installations along the cliffs of Dover. Anthony is an expert on WWII history and the place of Dover and Kent in that history, but he can also speak to the ancient history of the area, including the Roman era in Kent and the introduction of Christianity in 597. Of course he points out and discusses the cathedral itself, but also the abbey of St. Augustine just outside of town. In addition to driving through Kent, Anthony also took the time to walk us through Canterbury, pointing out key structures and monuments, and also offering advice on nearby walks along the river, and even on coffee shops and restaurants. A truly 5-star tour with an informative and personable guide. Left us with many ideas on additional excursions and things to follow up with on our own.

This tour was an amazing experience! For those interested in a smaller tour guided by someone who not only knows the area (he's a local) but by an EXPERT! As a history lover myself, I found this tour to be exceptional! I was fortunate to be the only person for a slow Sunday tour and Anthony was kind enough to alter the tour to my interests! Some places that were normally a drive by, Anthony would stop by the churches so i could take photos. This tour will take you through the small villages in Kent that you would never see with a large tour bus. I covered more ground with his half day tour that I would have on my own over several days, not to mention multiple places that only locals would know. As a constant traveler who regularly books tours, I can easily say that this was the best tour I've ever taken! I highly recommend Anthony and his tour company. His tour made me fall in love with Kent and I'm very excited to return again to see more of the garden of England! 5 star experience!
