Vung Tau

We will then make our way to Mount Nho to snap photos of the famous Christ the King statue. The 900 steps up the mountain lead to the spectacular Statue of Jesus. Standing at 32 meters in height with 18.3-meter long arms, this statue serves as an excellent vantage point to admire the whole city, shoreline and Hon Ba, an islet with a beautiful temple worthy of a few photos! After you walk down the mountain, enjoy a cool drink from your guide before heading to the next destination, Niet Ban Tinh Xa (Nirvana Pagoda). There, admire the sheer magnitude of the majestic statue of Lying Buddha. Before you leave, try drumming the giant bronze bell in the upper level for good luck. Continue on to the White Palace – once the summer palace for Bao Dai, the last Emperor of Vietnam. After a delicious local lunch, continue to visit Whale Temple, which worships the remains of a whale washed up onto the Vung Tau shore over 100 years ago. It is a popular stop with tourists and locals alike! This ornate temple is dedicated to the whale, and is the site where fishermen traditionally pray for their safety. This stop offers a fascinating insight into the belief systems of the locals here. Enjoy your second chance of a panoramic view of the city at the Vung Tau Lighthouse. With its peak located 170 meters above sea level, the Lighthouse is widely regarded as the most interesting landmark in the city. Built by the French, this lighthouse offers 360 degree vistas of the ocean and surrounding city. Definitely do not forget your cameras for this stop! If you’d like, arrange for a 10-minute motorbike ride to the top. In the afternoon, head back to Phu My Port/Vung Tau Port in good time for your cruise departure. Trip ends.

Our tour guide, Jack, spoke excellent English, was very professional and knowledgeable and was very enthusiastic. The pick-up at Phu My port outside the gate was trouble-free. There were eight in our group and our tour vehicle was a fancy, new, and very comfortable “party bus” designed to seat a dozen in comfort. We left the fancy interior lighting and music off so we could listen to Jack summarize a thousand years of Vietnam history in the 45-minutes it took to drive south on great roads to Vung Tau. Jack’s presentation was in small, easily digestible bites, interspersed with interesting stories and antidotes, and numerous hand-help photos, maps and charts. Once in Vung Tau, we stopped for Vietnamese traditional coffee, then visited the White Palace, quietly walking around the interior and exterior of this famous and historic landmark. Next, we drove to a peninsula with nice views of the Christ the King statue and beaches (none of us wanted to climb the hill for an in-person visit if the giant statue). We had a delicious Vietnamese lunch in the ex-pat tourist district followed by a visit to the Whale Temple and the Niết Bàn Tịnh Xá Buddhist Temple. Our last stop was at New Wave Beach, the main tourist beach in the city where we had free time to relax, walk around and get an ice cream if we wanted (not included). When we were all ready, we got back in to our fancy party bus and Jack shared a few more facts on the way back to the port, including a neutral, but factual and simple discussion of the American/Viet Nam War and post-war period and recent economic achievements. If you have a port call at Phu My and have already visited Ho Chi Min city (AKA Saigon) and want to do something different, I can recommend this tour, and specifically Jack (Tâm Phan).

Our tour guide Catherine spoke English really well and knew her history. We had a wonderful time on our excursion from cruise ship. She took really great care of us as we had some elderly members. We had a tasty lunch and loved the tour. Thx Catherine!
