Mountebank the original and best comedy walking tour of Edinburgh and the only tour of the city led by a professional, award winning stand-up comedian and historian with a Master degree in Scottish history. Since starting in 2019 Mountebank's success has attracted copy cat 'comedy' tours but Mountebank is the original, best and only tour led by an actual stand-up comic and historian!
Your guide is Edinburgh based stand-up comic and historian Daniel Downie - and his trusty sidekick Brahan the dog! Daniel has brought several sell-out shows all about Scotland to the Edinburgh Fringe. He has been described as 'outstanding' and 'must see' by the Scotsman newspaper and his show about Mary Queen of Scots was named 'Best History Show' at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Mountebank is all about the hysterical and ridiculous nature of Scotland's history, people, language, weather - all things Scottish basically! So come along and laugh a lot while you learn a little :)

Daniel was great! Had us laughing from the start. This was the right mix of comedy and history. He’s a historian AND a comedian. If you do a comedy tour, do it with him. Don’t settle for imitations.

So we went to Edinburgh with friends who had organised for all of us to do this “comedy tour”. I was expecting comedy and what we got was banter, piss-take, interesting facts, quick witted humour and all in the company of the very cute & cuddly Bran, the dog! (The guide didn’t offer cuddles! 🤷🏻♂️) It was absolutely brilliant, current and good hearted, would recommend to anyone 🫶🏼

Daniel was the perfect mix of information and comedy. Bran the dog was a very welcome bonus 😀 Great way to see the highlights of the city centre, would recommend.

Fun and entertaining way to get smarter on the history of Edinburgh - be set to flabethed and many laughs on the tour around the beautiful capital, but also plenty of knowledge and good stories. A super experience for both the teenager and his mother, we both give Daniel and his cute (and very soft) dog our very best recommendations.

Absolutely loved it. We were rained on, hailed on, and faced gusts of wind but every one of us stuck with Daniel to the end because he’s hilarious and knowledgeable. He remembered all our names and made everyone feel welcome. And his dog is just lovely. Don’t bother if you’re thin skinned and can’t laugh at yourself—you need to be made of sturdier stuff to enjoy this tour.

On this cold & blustery morn we followed the knowledgeable king of Comedy around the corners of the old town up n down many a steep step & dark close. Hilarious take on all things Scottish although I will never see the bagpipes the same again . Fittingly we ended the tour at the infamous Gallows ( literally) and bid all farewell. Thank you D from the D If you know you know ! Highly recommend & wear your thermals Angela & the gals who love Tuscany x

Perfect mixture of history, humor and culture. No matter how Scottish the weather is, Daniel will warm you up with his quick wits and storytelling skills. 5/5, money well spent.
