What To Expect
Theyyam
Our guide will meet you at your hotel one hour prior to the starting time. We will visit shrines that hold yearly theyyam performances during this experience. You will be accompanied by an English-speaking tour guide who will provide in-depth explanations of the performance and its significance. In order to learn more about the history of the specific theyyam, we will also be engaging with the performers and some locals. After the experience, we will head back to your hotel in Kannur. Since the performers travel between temples to execute theyyam rituals, the location of this activity will vary depending on the dates, but we will always begin our experience in Kannur.

5.00Our first Theyyam experience, and it genuinely blew our minds. Lidin made sure we got up close for the whole thing - which made all the difference. He briefed us on each Theyyam before it began, giving us context that turned watching into actually understanding. Communication before the experience was seamless too. He responded quickly and patiently to every question we had. Theyyam is powerful and holds you completely. If you have the chance to see it in person, don’t skip it - and go with someone who knows it the way Lidin does.

In just two days, we were able to see five different Theyyams, each one unique, powerful, and deeply captivating. From the intense drumming and vibrant face painting to the magnificent costumes and rituals, every performance was mesmerizing. Watching multiple Theyyams gave us a deeper appreciation of the stories, traditions, and spiritual energy behind each ritual. Lidin was knowledgeable and well-organized, ensuring we didn’t miss any important moments and helping us understand the significance of each Theyyam. If you want a complete and meaningful Theyyam experience, this is absolutely the way to do it. Highly recommended!

5.00We had a fabulous time with Lidin experiencing Theyyam for the first time. He was fun, kind and knowledgeable, taking his time to explain the experience- the background relevance etc. He took us at just the right pace. We then had the chance to visit his home for lunch. Wow! This was amazing. Absolutely delicious and it was great to understand India and the differences in new ways. All wonderful. I would recommend this tour with no hesitation! Great thing to do when in this part of Kerala.

5.00An incredible, bucket-list experience! Lidin is well versed with the local culture. He was punctual, professional, and ensured he found a spectacular ritual happening during our stay. From the hypnotic drumming to the intricate face painting and massive headdresses, everything was mesmerising. Having Lidin around helped us understand the stories behind the theyyams which we wouldn't have otherwise known. Lidin also took us to local eateries to enjoy the great food. I strongly recommend booking your theyyam tour with Lidin!!

5.00We enjoyed two amazing tours of Theyyam with Lidin. The colors, sounds and traditions are a must-see while in the area. Lidin's expertise, clear explanations and engaging personality made it a fun and interesting time. He aldo added to our overall experience while we were driving around. He proactively pointed out aspects of everyday life in the towns and was genuinely interested in conversing on a variety of topics. And to top it all off, we also enjoyed a warm welcome and delicious lunch with his family! We highly recommend Lidin for a first rate touring experience!

5.00Lidin turned out to be the perfect guide for me. Very quickly he demonstrated his initiative and flexibility by reorganizing my itinerary once it became clear to him that I was in Kannur primarily to witness Theyyams. He made going to Theyyams the priority for my four days in Kannur and even slipped in a sunset Theyyam on my day of arrival in Kannur, which had originally been scheduled as a "rest" day. Considering how short my time in Kannur was, I am very happy for Lidin's ability to match my priorities. For the rest, I echo all the praises that other reviewers have heaped on Lidin. He was a very personable man, passionate, authentic and knowledgeable about the subject of Theyyams. Not to be left out is to note that Lidin takes care of you when you are at a Theyyam site. I always felt secure even when things felt a bit shaky at a night time Theyyam when it was crowded and seemingly chaotic. I am truly thankful for my awesome and enjoyable introduction to Theyyams, and Lidin had a large part in that e experience.
