Explore the historic East Coast of Cyprus with a visit to Famagusta, a port city rich in heritage. Stroll through the Old Town and discover its fascinating past.
Visit Othello Castle, built in the 14th century by the Lusignan dynasty and named after Shakespeare’s famous play. Admire the Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, a Gothic masterpiece inspired by Notre Dame, later converted into a mosque during Ottoman rule. Walk along the city’s defensive walls for stunning panoramic views.
Next, step back in time at the ancient city of Salamis, once the largest city in Cyprus. According to legend, it was founded by Teucer, mentioned in Homer’s Iliad. Finally, take in the eerie sight of Varosha, the infamous "ghost town" left abandoned due to Cyprus’ turbulent history.

Salamis
Once the thriving capital of ancient Cyprus, Salamis now stretches out in sun-drenched ruins just north of Famagusta. Its grand theatre, marble colonnades, and vast gymnasium invite you to walk through centuries of history — with the sound of waves never far off.
Famagusta
Famagusta’s city walls don’t just surround the old town — they shape its soul, with massive stone bastions that rise from quiet streets like reminders of another era. Climb to the top and the past feels close: cannons may be gone, but the view still guards the coast.

A word of warning for anyone booking the day trip to Turkish occupied Cyprus through Jet2. This really is a FULL day trip of 12-14 hours so be prepared for a very long day. The trip itself is very informative & visits several sites on the Turkish side. A refreshment/toilet break is included on both the outward & return journeys around the Limassol area at a motorway service area type of place but I'd advise taking some food and drink with you to cover outward & return trips. I'd say it's not really suitable for young kids because of the long day.
