Discover the history, the architecture and charm of some places most locals don’t even know exist. The evolution of Bucharest is one of the best instances of the ambiguous relationship existing between the Romanian lands and the Ottoman Empire. Although it was not an Ottoman town, it shared many aspects with towns in the Ottoman area of influence.
One of these shared aspects was the division by Mahallas. Mahallas were small quarters of the town which arose around a religious building and which were often inhabited by a homogeneous community of people belonging to the same ethnic, social or religious groups. As the town grew, mahallas fused with each other giving birth to wider neighborhoods that suffered through waves of modernization, earthquakes, wars and Ceausescu's demolition projects. This was the fate of neighborhoods like the Armenian Quarter, Mantuleasa, the Old Jewish Quarter & Batistei. Discover and learn about all the mixtures of architecture, cultures and cuisines.

Excellent, informative and very interesting tour of several notable neighborhoods that your average tourist probably would not discover! Andrea, our tour guide and a resident of Bucharest, guided me through the following neighborhoods: Batistei; Armenian; Mantuleasa; Olari; Ioanid-Gradina; and Icoanei. Andrea explained each neighborhood, discussng key characteristics and buildings/sights along the way. We made several stops, and Andrea also provided some good insider recommendations for different restaurants in each neighborhood. An added bonus was that this ended up being a private tour, as I was the only one who booked the tour for that day. Andrea is a personable and passionate guide, and taking this tour felt like visiting each neighborhood with an insider friend rather than a regular guide. I highly reommend this tour, and Andrea as a guide, if you want to get off the beaten track after visiting the standard attractions and then explore some real and quite interesting Bucharest neighborhoods. Highly recommended!

This was one of our favorite walking tours on our trip to Bucharest. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and easy to talk to. When she learned some of the stops planned for the tour we had already seen, she took us to different places so we could experience more. Highly recommended!

Highly recommended, this is a tour mostly about architecture and how it was influenced and changed during history. Ioana has a passion for culture and it shows, she was extremely knowledgeable and an absolutely lovely (I got there on Easter and she brought me a traditional Romanian cake for the holiday to try!). If you have an interest in Bucharest's history this is the tour for you.

This is a great tour to see the hidden part of the city, much quieter and very different from the big avenues and communist architecture elsewhere. We did this tour on Easter Sunday when everything else is closed, and were able to enter a beautiful church, so it was so much more special. Would definitely recommend this tour.

I was the only person on this tour, which was a bit of a shame. The guide (Irina and second guide Alex) was very pleasant and we had a good walk around the neighbourhoods of the city centre, although it did feel a bit random at times and I'm not sure there was a planned route. There was lots of information and I felt that I saw a side of the city that I wouldn't have otherwise experienced, so the tour was useful and enjoyable.

Liked seeing a part of Bucharest that we wouldn't have seen otherwise. Especially liked having the various styles of architecture identified and explained. Nice way to settle in before the "official tour" started.

Our time with Ioana turned out to be an education in the history and architecture of Bucharest. We were very impressed and highly recommend this tour.
