Waterford Treasures: Medieval Museum
The Medieval Museum houses the 13th century Choristers Hall and the 15th century Mayor’s Wine Vault, in the heart of Waterford's Viking Triangle and is the only museum of its kind in Ireland and Europe that is built over two national monuments. This striking new building reveals the story of Waterford through the middle Ages and visitors are wowed as they go underneath the new building into centuries old vaults. On display are the magnificent Cloth of Gold vestments the only complete pre-reformation set to survive in Europe. It's the only complete set of medieval High Mass Vestments to survive in Northern Europe, which were lost for hundreds of years after they were hidden from Cromwell’s army in the floor of the then Christ Church Cathedral, the only piece of clothing to survive from King Henry VIII’s reign, the ‘Cap of Maintenance’, as well as the Great Charter Roll which was viewed by Queen Elizabeth II on her visit to Ireland. Take the tour with our costumed re-enactor, or use our multimedia handheld guide in English, French or German or just wander at your lesiure throughout the museum.

Wonderful museum, the history of the city is fascinating. I particularly liked the audio visual presentation relating the intense rivalry between Waterford and the port of New Ross. Unfortunately the basement was off limits due to Winterval. I’m looking forward to returning to see it.

An incredibly interesting overview of the history of Ireland's oldest city. From the Vikings, to the Normans and keeping out that rogue Cromwell, Deirdre was a wealth of knowledge. It's worth going to see the vestments alone. Thoroughly recommend.

The exhibits were really interesting including pre and Medieval Parchments. A Hat worn by Henry VIII was on view. This museum is a must for Irish & British visitors alike as well as European and Americans interested. Jamie hosted the tour and kept it light but informative.

The Medieval Museum in Waterford, Ireland was very interesting and enjoyable. At first I thought it would be a lot of medieval armor and swords but the museum gives a wonderful accounting of the growth of Waterford from medieval times to the present. The exhibit on the religious vestments and the mayors of Waterford were our favorites and my husband found a distant relative among the list of mayors!
