  • An unforgettable wine experience in Dijon!

My wife and I had the most enjoyable and enlightening wine class with Matt at The Wine Compass. It was easily one of the best wine experiences we’ve ever had. Matt’s passion for wine is infectious — he explains everything with warmth, clarity, and enthusiasm. We learned how to identify notes, aromas, and flavours in both young and mature wines, and how to assess them according to our own tastes. The setting is beautiful, the wines and pairings were superb, and the whole experience was both educational and great fun. If you’re curious about Burgundy wines or simply want to deepen your appreciation for them, this is an absolute must in Dijon.

There are not enough superlatives to use to describe the wine class we enjoyed with Matt! First of off, his location, although a little tricky to find, oozes charm! He is located in an old cellar that looks like it was made specifically to store wine (which it probably was). One is immediately captivated by the space. The stone walls and ceiling are comprised of a circular arch of stones painted white. One gets the sense that he/she is stepping back into a time when grapes were all picked by hand and horses provided most of the transportation! Matt, himself, is very impressive. He speaks perfect English so guests do not have to strain or guess what he is saying. He is vey knowledgeable and shares his knowledge in a straightforward and easy manner. He talks a little about himself and by the time you are ready to leave, you wish you lived in Dijon so that you could develop a friendship with him! For us, he started with a little lesson on what aromas on might notice in wine. Then we went on to exploring flavors. It all was very fascinating! We drank six or seven wines - both whites and reds. Most of us (there were eight in the group) enjoyed all of the wines. My wife and I had a great time and agreed that we learned a lot. Do not hesitate to join one of Matt's classes, you will love it! Oh, as a tip - suggest you walk/travel to the location in advance of your session - the location is a little difficult to find and it would be a shame if you missed the start of the class!

This is a must for anyone who drinks wine regardless of how knowledgeable you are. Our Master Som Matt was interesting, exciting, knowledgeable, friendly, and professional. I am a wine enthusiast and this session was the best two hours of my French trip. There were 6 of us and we all loved the class.

We very much enjoyed our masterclass with Matthieu. His cellar sets the right mood. Matthieu’s style is relaxed and informative as he clearly shows a depth of knowledge about old world wines and Bourgogne in particular. We left feeling like we had learned a lot and had a lot of fun getting there. What a great experience.

Mathieu from Wine Compass is so impressively knowledgeable with fine wines / trends from multiple wine producing countries. A true local who knows exceptional value Burgundian wines. I learned so much in a compact session. The fun part is the blind tasting of exceptional quality of Burgundian wines without the Grand Cru price tag. So much fun yet discovering new flavour profiles followimg the guidance into tasting each wine. Bravo & Sante. I can do this tasting again and highly recommended.

We had a wonderful experience at the Burgundy Wine Masterclass with owner Matthieu. He was incredibly knowledgeable and we came away feeling like we had learned so much about the wines and the region. Matthieu was warm and personable, delivering the class in excellent English, and he went above and beyond by offering thoughtful recommendations for dining and wine experiences during our stay. The quality of the tasting and pairings was excellent, making the experience both educational and enjoyable. We would highly recommend this masterclass to anyone visiting Dijon and would happily return on a future trip!

Pauline was a great "tour guide" through the world of Burgundy wines. We got to try 3 whites, 3 reds and each wine was paired with a small sample of an appropriate cheese or meat. She is incredibly knowledgable and answered all of questions. I really appreciated her contacting me before the event to give us the specifics about the meeting time and place and she even asked if we had anyone with dietary restrictions in our group. All in all, a great way to spend a couple of hours in Dijon.

Very interesting experience in a beautiful cellar. We learned a lot about wines and had the chance to taste 6 Burgundy wines (4 whites, 2 reds), everyone of them with a piece of cheese or sausage. However, the price was too high for this experience.

  • A must do before exploring the vineyards!

Fantastic Burgundy wine class with The Wine Compass! Pauline is incredibly knowledgeable and made the wine less intimidating and more approachable. I learned more from her in a few hours than in years of study on my own. Loved the smell tests, cheese pairing, and her passion for the region. Small cellar, huge impact! I’d highly recommend this course before you dive into any winery visits in the area.
