Our tour offers a memorable day in one of Bavaria’s most scenic and unspoiled areas. For over five centuries, this stunning monastery has been home to Benedictine monks, continuing the traditions of hospitality and beer brewing that you can enjoy today.
On the scenic train journey through the Bavarian countryside, you will learn about Andechs’ rich history, from its origins as a castle for the Counts of Andechs and their captivating story of rise, betrayal and downfall to its transformation in 1455 into a Benedictine monastery. The history and tradition plus the daily life of a monk in the monastery will also be explained.
Afterward you can hike a medieval pilgrimage route with wonderful views of the countryside or take a bus if preferred and at the monastery, explore the stunning Baroque church, then relax in the beer hall or beer garden with a monk-brewed beer and locally sourced food.
There is also an optional extra to view the reopened baroque apothecary on a VR tour.

Andechs Monastery
Your guide will meet you in the lobby of your hotel before you embark together on a train that passes though the beautiful Bavarian countryside. On your way to the famous lake Ammersee you will learn about the history of the monastery and the House of Andechs. Once there you have a choice of either enjoying a forty minute hike on an old pilgrims route to the top of the Holy Mountain itself where you can see the wonderful baroque church of the monastery, admire the views from the balcony and enjoy a refreshing beer and tuck into the locally sourced specialties. Alternatively, you can do all of the above but if you want to make it a lazier day we can just take the bus to the top of the hill!

Tom was very knowledgeable about the abbey and its history. He was very engaging and made the day fun. I would certainly do other tours with Tom's Tours.
