After an early wake-up around 3:30 AM, you'll head off in a 4x4 jeep for the ascent of Mount Bromo (active volcano, 2300 m). You’ll hike a narrow, winding path with 250 steps up to the summit. At the top, take in the breathtaking view of the smoking crater as the first light of day appears – a magical, unforgettable moment. The sunrise over Bromo, surrounded by Batok (extinct, 2400 m) and Semeru (active, 3677 m – Java’s highest volcano), is a stunning sight. After sunrise, cross the "Sea of Sand," a landscape of dust and volcanic ash from past eruptions. Then head to Seruni viewpoint, a quiet spot with panoramic views of the Tengger massif. After a well-deserved breakfast, your journey continues through scenic villages and plantations (coffee, tobacco, rice, etc.) toward Kawah Ijen, with a local lunch along the way. You’ll stay in a comfortable guesthouse near the volcano, where a traditional Javanese dinner awaits to end your day.

Ijen Crater Indonesia
Departure is set for 1:00 AM to reach base camp at 1900 meters. After safety instructions and gear (lamps, gas masks, etc.), you’ll start a 1.5-hour hike with our experienced team along a scenic mountain path under the stars, reaching Kawah Ijen’s summit at 2300 meters. The most spectacular part begins here: in total darkness, descend into the active crater to witness a rare natural wonder—blue flames. Our guides, former miners and sulfur porters, assist you during the descent, ensuring your safety throughout this volcanic experience. At sunrise, discover the world’s largest acid lake—an unforgettable sight. While admiring its turquoise waters, you’ll witness the strength of sulfur workers carrying heavy loads up the crater. After returning to base camp and the guesthouse, enjoy a homemade breakfast from a local Javanese family and a well-earned shower before heading back to Bali. After the ferry crossing, drop-off is available in Pemuteran, Munduk, Ubud, or Seminyak.

Schedule is a bit hectic but so worth it for an amazing experience. Beginning with Bromo you get settled into the guest house which is very rustic and basic so don’t expect a lot of amenities there but staff is wonderful and location is within short walk of amazing viewpoint of Bromo. If you had an opportunity request Deri as your guide. He was amazing and knows Bromo inside and out. While all the groups were heading off to the viewpoint for sunrise, we veered off toward the crater and started our ascent just him and I. We climbed the crater in the dark with him telling me about the area and the history. Arrived at the rim of the crater in the dark and walked to a viewing point there to watch the fire while behind us anyone at the viewpoint was staring at clouds that had rolled in. Had an amazing 30 minutes there before heading higher up to the summit to watch sunrise. Also spectacular and we were the only two there. After a while started our descent over the edge of the crater while the crowds were coming up the trail away from us so continuing a solitary experience there. It was a dream to be there and he made it so much more special. By the time we hit to the viewpoint it had cleared and we were the only ones there as well. Deri is the guy! Then off to Ljen where I also stayed at Good Karma guesthouse but this one is amazingly beautiful had built with gardens and beautiful units. Petra and the amazing staff took such good care of us and fed us amazing vegetarian meals prepared with lots of local and home grown ingredients. Cant say enough good things about them. Petra briefed the three of us in this group on what to expect and we left the following morning at 1 am for basecamp and met our guide Hari who was also amazing and was a former miner in Ljen so knows the crater well. A long steep hike comes next I won’t deny it was challenging so mental prep for that. Tons of people up the 6 foot wide path which has slippery spots and rough terrain so use caution. Once you get to the top 90 minutes later all those people converge on a single file entry point to begin the 200m descent to the base of the crater and then all converge again in a single point on a ledge right next to the fire for a photo op. Everyone wants to beat that point so guides usher people up and down to get their moment and then continue to other viewing spots close by and to sulphur area. It is unlike anything you will ever experience again. I have video posted on Instagram to check out if you like #trekkintheringoffire. You won’t believe it. Sulphuric acid lake (worlds largest) doesn’t really appear until sunrise even though it is right there so any moisture in the crater base is actually acid. Highly dangerous so listen to your guide. Hari was the best again so would highly recommend him. The miners are gathering sulphur and lugging it back to the rim through the crowds who part to give them the right of way as we all go back up to the rim to view the lake and then begin final descent. Your legs will know you did this trip the next day but I cat recommend it highly enough and very glad I did this tour! PS I had been the oldest person I saw there that day (63) but mentally prepare and you will be fine.

We did the Mt. Bromo and Kawah Ijen tour, starting from Yogyakarta and ending in Bali. The tour includes transportation, accommodation, equipment and food. The staff is really nice at every location, and we also had some really tasty local food! We were picked up at the train station by our tour guide Sahal and the driver Dedi, who were very helpful and took us everywhere, till Bali. Thank you guys! The first tour stop was at a characteristic village near Mt. Bromo, very peaceful and far from the noise, where we met our nice local guide Fano. Thanks to him, we avoided the crowd and found the best stop at the top of the volcano where we enjoyed the sunrise and the breathtaking view! Then, we moved towards our next destination, Kawah Ijen, where we admired the blue flames and the world’s largest, acidic crater lake. The early wake up call and the challenging hiking are totally worthy! For this reason, a special thanks goes to our amazing guides Harry, Pur and Fawas! Really appreciate you guys! Without them the experience wouldn’t be the same. They know exactly what they are doing to make everything easier and comfortable, they always find ways to avoid crowded spots and to find the best ones! So what else to say if not that I totally recommend it!

It has been an amazing experience!!! I recommend it if or if. Exceptional treatment from all the guides, especially Sahal and Reza, who accompanied us during the three days, such as Harry, the guide who accompanied us in Kawah Ijen, very watchful of the whole group throughout the journey. Also the experience of seeing two active volcanoes is impressive.
