  • You can learn from models to VR in a variety of ways

The Gunkanjima cruise was better than I expected, so I stopped by here quickly. Although it is a digital museum, there are many analog exhibits such as models, and I was able to learn about Gunkanjima in various ways, from the experience using cutting-edge VR goggles. The style is to climb up a building that is not wide, but only in this museum, the experience itself seemed to represent the uniqueness of Gunkanjima, where the first reinforced concrete high-rise building in Japan stood, and I think it was rather good.

This place was better than expected. Initially I had a feeling this was more of a token experience with small dated digital areas that didn't really befit that of a museum. Fortunately, I was wrong. The museum is housed in its own building and is spread across 3 or 4 floors. The entranceway comprises of the shop, lockers and reception area. The first floor talks of the beginning of Gunkanjima and how it experienced rapid growth and development. There are several videos and tablets that you can hold and rotate to see and listen to recollections from residence on the island about what life was like. This includes a large 3D map of the island and a mock 3D mine worker experience video, whereby you can see what it was like going deep into the mines to extract the coal and its processes. Likewise, there is also a diorama of a residence room as it would have appeared in the late 1960s. This is all surprisingly informative and quite detailed if you have the time to devote to the information provided. The next floor talks about life on the island (social activities, schooling, getting around) before moving onto the decline of Gunkanjima. There is a small space devoted to the architecture of the buildings on the island before the top floor talks of preservation efforts since the island became uninhabited. There is also a further immersive experience at the top which basically involves a fly-over of the island as it appears today in surprisingly good detail. In short, the interactives are of good quality and the information provided is plentiful. Worth the entrance fee, aided by the fact I went in the morning when it was fairly quiet. Still, it is a smallish museum so I wouldn't recommend coming later in the day when its busier as you may need to wait for tablets to become free or videos may be obstructed by others.

  • The most disrespectful experience of my Japan trip

I had booked an island tour. It wasn't canceled, I was only informed when I arrived at the museum. Absolutely disrespectful! As a "deal" I was allowed in for half price - 900 yen instead of 1800. The museum isn't worth 100 yen, trust me.

I went to this museum, but really wanted to go to the island. But after reading the reviews about how it is not guaranteed to get on the island and the seasickness endured to get there plus only 1 day of English, I thought this would be a better choice. I believe it was. Price was $18 to get into each and it amazed me how deep the mine was and how it operated - not a job I would like. It was also interesting to learn about the people and their lives and also just have a sit down. I would recommend as something to see when in Nagasaki, very simple activity and all through movies and pictures. I walked away with a sense of how it was to live there. I am sure one day there would be a 3d visual experience like you are walking through the buildings.

  • Worth a Visit to Prepare for the Tour to the Island

Honestly I might not make a trip to the museum if not as a package with the tour to the island and the meeting point for ticket collection. Staff was very friendly and helpful and I met one who is from Hong Kong and speaks English and Cantonese. He highly recommended me to visit the fourth floor for the "Simulated Gunkanjima landing experience using the latest VR technology" and I did enjoy seeing the inside of the old buildings that were not accessible via physical visit. There are movies showing the history of the island that helps one prepare for the island tour, thus definitely a worthwhile visit.

there's free english audio guide provided for free, it's separated into different parts across 3 floors. With videos interviewing the old residence and a model of the island itself. It's interesting.

It's a good idea to spend a tiny bit of time in this museum before you head out to the island as all explanation is in Japanese. Also in this museum: it's all in Japanese including the show....except for 4 booths on the right at the 1st floor where you can choose your language : they are really interesting and visualize very very well the whole story with some interesting facts. There's an audio-guide at the museum but it was not very useful. Actually you don't want to spend too much time in the museum as you want to head off for the island asap. The museum is just the obligatory gathering place before embarking.
