> Celebrate the beauty of spring in Kyoto through a seasonal tea ceremony inspired by cherry blossoms. This special spring experience takes place in a 150-year-old Kyoto machiya, where the tea room is arranged with sakura flowers, seasonal incense, and elegant tea bowls in soft spring colors. Before the ceremony begins, guests receive a short introduction to machiya architecture and Kyoto lifestyle, helping you understand how seasonal design and aesthetics are reflected in Japanese culture. Guests are comfortably seated on chairs (no kneeling required) while a tea practitioner with over 16 years of training performs a live table-style tea ceremony. Each movement and utensil is explained in clear English, making the cultural meaning easy to understand. After watching the demonstration, guests will also have the opportunity to prepare their own bowl of matcha using traditional tea utensils, guided step by step by the instructor. The matcha is served with delicate spring-themed Japanese sweets specially selected for the season. The atmosphere remains calm and intimate, allowing time for photos, questions, and relaxed conversation.

This was an amazing experience in a beautiful machiya. Yuki was really great at answering our questions and Asano was a great teacher and very knowledgeable. It was fascinating to learn about the history and principles of tea making. Would highly recommend!

It was a very enjoyable experience. The tea teacher is kind and handsome. You can also make your own matcha. The Nishijin area of the neighborhood is also a quiet city. There are also Kitano Tenmangu Shrine and Kamishichiken sj, about 10 minutes on foot. Perfect for those who want to experience the cherry blossom season slowly.

I had a tea ceremony experience in a quiet machiya house in Nishijin. It didn’t feel like a place made for tourists—the house still preserves the atmosphere of everyday life in Kyoto, and from the moment I stepped inside I felt a sense of calm. First, the tea master demonstrated the ceremony with beautiful and graceful movements. After that, we had the chance to prepare the tea ourselves. I was a little nervous and not very skillful, but as I focused on making a single bowl of tea, I gradually forgot everything else around me. Through this experience, I also gained a deeper understanding of the connection between Zen and tea, and the spirit of Japanese hospitality, omotenashi. In the peaceful machiya setting, with the teacher’s gentle guidance, I found myself relaxing and letting go of the usual distractions of daily life. It was a memorable experience, and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to enjoy a quiet and authentic cultural moment in Kyoto.
