Famous for its centuries-old forging tradition, Da Sy was once known for supplying weaponry during Vietnam’s historical wars. In this interactive workshop, you’ll immerse yourself in the knife-making process, step by step: - Design: Begin by sketching your blade on a carefully selected piece of durable metal, chosen for its strength and quality. - Forging: Cut out the blade and tang (the part that fits into the handle) using traditional tools like hammers, cutters, and an anvil. Heat them in the fiery forge to prepare for shaping. - Shaping: Work side-by-side with artisans, taking turns hammering the metal into the desired shape. A hydraulic machine will help refine any rough edges for a smooth finish. - Sharpening: Finally, sharpen the blade on a grindstone. This process includes several steps, one involving a unique tar-based wash—an age-old family secret passed down through generations! Throughout the experience, our skilled artisan will guide you, ensuring every detail of your work reflects your personal touch. You’ll bring home not just a beautifully crafted knife but also a part of yourself in its creation—a piece you can use to create delicious meals and lasting memories.
All tools are provided at the artisan's house, along with all necessary safety equipment for knife making.

One thing I knew I was set on was finding a traditional knife making class in Vietnam as I know how incredibly skilled and respected these metal smiths are. My partner was happy to take the challenge and find an experience that he knew we would both enjoy. Calling this experience anything less than amazing and heart fulfilling is just not enough and does not do it justice. Guided by the sweetest tour guide Son, enlightening us on everything from the traditions of the area, where he grew up and even became our personal photographer for the day :)) Our driver sweet Mr Binh was so kind and generous, we found him happily with his feet up after the class waiting for us drinking an ice tea in true Vietnamese fashion. He even dropped us off at a restaurant that served our favourite Bánh Mì Chảo for lunch afterwards. Firstly was incredibly excited and privileged to learn from a female metal smith. Mrs Tuyen is nationally respected and recognised for her craft. She is a master at what she does. Was so warmly welcomed into her home along with her beautiful Grandson and Son. The experience was everything I ever wanted. As I personally have such a love for metal work, This was my happy place :)) The experience felt so trusting and creative. You start by picking your desired knife shape and handle. Moving between each step learning and absorbing, comfort knowing you had the master to refine any mistakes. In the end we left with two stunning knives, one I’m gifted to my dad, one is staying with us and will become our new everything kitchen knife and will be loved I’m sure. One of the highlights for sure was sitting together, Son, Mr Binh and us, drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes and talking about the philosophy of life. Can’t recommend enough x

Wasn’t too sure what to expect but really enjoyed this. The whole team at the blacksmith are involved and very patiently helped me through the steps. You choose your blade shape and with a fair amount of hand holding create a forged blade and its wooden handle. It was very interesting to see the premises (proper working knife makers, no frills) and get a chance to try out the skills and tools. Really pleased with the final product too! Only potential challenge for some might be the low stools you sit on but again the team were helpful!

The knife making workshop is great! The organisation helped me get to the location in time and Mint, the translator, made me feel right at home once I arrived. Over some tea, she helped me design a personable and beautiful knife. This was no easy feat because I wasnt greatly prepared… Luckily blacksmith Chiến and his kind wife Lịch are cunning craftsmen and could bring my visualisation to life! We smiled and laughed a lot and Mints support and translation helped form a really fun and warm connection to all of us. While I was being put to work Mint told about the art of blacksmithing knives and the local history. At other times I stood in awe as Chiến and Lịch showed me how the real work is done. We engraved the blade of the knife to make it even more personal and I’m so happy with our creation! Don’t think twice about doing this workshop. You will see a different side of Hanoi, be surrounded by kind and artisan people in a great atmosphere and learn a new craft and history. I ended up with a beautiful knife that the organisation will help me ship back to my home country and with a new friend! Thank you again Mint, Chiến, Lịch and team!
