Famous for its centuries-old forging tradition, Da Sy was once known for supplying weaponry during Vietnam’s historical wars. In this interactive workshop, you’ll immerse yourself in the knife-making process, step by step: - Design: Begin by sketching your blade on a carefully selected piece of durable metal, chosen for its strength and quality. - Forging: Cut out the blade and tang (the part that fits into the handle) using traditional tools like hammers, cutters, and an anvil. Heat them in the fiery forge to prepare for shaping. - Shaping: Work side-by-side with artisans, taking turns hammering the metal into the desired shape. A hydraulic machine will help refine any rough edges for a smooth finish. - Sharpening: Finally, sharpen the blade on a grindstone. This process includes several steps, one involving a unique tar-based wash—an age-old family secret passed down through generations! Throughout the experience, our skilled artisan will guide you, ensuring every detail of your work reflects your personal touch. You’ll bring home not just a beautifully crafted knife but also a part of yourself in its creation—a piece you can use to create delicious meals and lasting memories.
All tools are provided at the artisan's house, along with all necessary safety equipment for knife making.

I recently participated in the knife making course located in Da Sy, an old blacksmithing village located roughly 30 minutes from our hotel. The course was very hands on, and the master craftswoman, Tuyến knew exactly what she was doing. It was also very helpful having Mint there, as she was able to translate between English and Vietnamese for us. Tuyến has over 30 years of experience, and helped my brother and I create 2 kitchen knifes that looked amazing and were functional. While I was happy with how the knife turned out, my favourite part of this process was making the handle, as it required delicate carving, which I thoroughly enjoyed. For anyone looking for a hands on, traditional experience in and around Hanoi, I highly recommended this knife making course. You don't just get to learn how to make a knife, but you also get to take it home with you.

I participated in the nice making workshop recently where Tuyến helped me to make my knife. She is an excellent knife maker, with lots of experience and expertise. She can help you make whatever you envision. It was an excellent workshop which was very try hands on and enjoyable. Having Mint to translate to English made the process much easier. I would recommend to go make a knife here while visiting Vietnam. It was excellent and one of the highlights on my trip so far. You get to make each part of the knife such as the handle and the actual design of the blade. Then you shape it and make it to your liking. Was excellent and everyone was friendly.

I recently participated in a knife-making workshop in Hanoi, and it was an unforgettable experience. The two women who guided us were incredibly hospitable, creating an inviting atmosphere from the moment we arrived. Their calm demeanor and patience made the entire process enjoyable and stress-free. They skillfully walked us through each step of crafting our knives, sharing tips and insights along the way. The result was not just a beautifully crafted knife that I can use, but also a wonderful keepsake that I will cherish for years to come. This experience is a perfect blend of practicality and nostalgia, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to immerse themselves in local culture while creating something truly special. Thibault

My favorite experience in Vietnam. They let you do every step of the process but each step is polished by the master for you so you actually have a product wich is nice and useful and you want to keep. Our guide Mint was super friendly, warm and helped us during the process. You have to do this. The Master and her family are super friendly and welcoming.

A unique experience, being able to make your own knife in a totally personalized way. It has been a pleasure to meet Mint, she has taught us a lot about the complete process of how to make a knife and also about curiosities of her culture. Completely recommended for everyone so you can take a valuable and very useful souvenir.
