Hiroshima is the largest city in the Chugoku Region. The city gained worldwide recognition when the first atomic bomb was dropped on August 6, 1945. The bomb caused immense destruction, obliterating nearly everything within a two-kilometer radius.
Despite predictions that the city would be uninhabitable, Hiroshima was rebuilt with great effort. Historical monuments, including Hiroshima Castle and Shukkeien Garden, were reconstructed. A large area in the city center was designated as Peace Memorial Park, reflecting the city's aspiration for peace.
Miyajima, less than an hour from Hiroshima, is famous for its giant torii gate that appears to float on the water at high tide. This view is ranked as one of Japan's three best.
The island is officially named Itsukushima, but it is commonly called Miyajima ("shrine island") because of its close association with Itsukushima Shrine. Like the torii gate, the shrine's main buildings are also built over water.

Miyajima
Miyajima (宮島) is a small island less than an hour outside the city of Hiroshima. It is most famous for its giant torii gate, which at high tide seems to float on the water. The sight is ranked as one of Japan's three best views. While officially named Itsukushima, the island is more commonly referred to as Miyajima, Japanese for "shrine island". This is because the island is so closely related to its key shrine, Itsukushima Shrine, in the public's mind. Like the torii gate, the shrine's main buildings are built over water. Miyajima is a romantic place, best enjoyed by staying overnight at one of the island's ryokan. While there are usually many day tourists, in the evening the area becomes much quieter and more peaceful. There are also wild deer on the island that have become accustomed to people. In the day the deer wander around the same sites as the tourists, and in the evening they sleep along the walking paths.
Itsukushima Shrine
The centuries-old Itsukushima Shrine (厳島神社, Itsukushima Jinja) on Miyajima is the source of both the island's fame and its name. Formally named Itsukushima, the island is more popularly known as "Miyajima", literally "shrine island" in Japanese, thanks to its star attraction. The shrine is known worldwide for its iconic "floating" torii gate. The shrine and its torii gate are unique for being built over water, seemingly floating in the sea during high tide. The shrine complex consists of multiple buildings, including a prayer hall, a main hall and a noh theater stage, which are connected by boardwalks and supported by pillars above the sea.

My wife and I were originally concerned about what seemed like such a long day trip from Kyoto to Hiroshima to see the A-Bomb Dome and Peace Museum, but decided to do it anyway. Yumi, our guide, did an incredible job keeping the day moving and fun, and staying flexible with us when we needed to make a small detour. We even managed to get some local Okinomiyaki, lemon drinks and maple cakes the area is known for. In hindsight, having been on the fence beforehand, I’m really glad we made the decision and Yumi made it easy!

We had such a fantastic day with Taka who expertly guided us through Miyajima and Hiroshima. It was extremely helpful having him help us efficiently navigate the public transportation (subway, train, ferry and bus!) to help make the most of the day. He helped arrange an amazing lunch experience at Miyajima and we had a long but enjoyable and informative day.

Amazing tour to Hiroshima with the visit of Miyajima island as well as Peace Memorial park with our fantastic guide Sachiko who did an excellent job. Very nice was also the ride with the Shinkansen train from Kyoto.

Miyajimi was very nice and enjoyable. Had a great lunch. Hiroshima was humbling and educational. We had our 13 year old granddaughter, and she knew very little of the history.

We had a really nice tour to Hiroshima and Mayajima. I’m not sure if it is worth taking a total of about 5 hours of trains/buses though for a day trip from Kyoto, although I totally understand that’s what we signed up for. In hindsight, I wish we had spent a night in Hiroshima to have had more time to explore the city beyond the museum. Mayajima was stunning.

We were both very disappointed with what we experienced especially considering what we paid. Didn’t get a lot of local information of the places we went and felt weren’t given clear information what there was to see and how long we had at each site. Tour finished 2 hours earlier than train was booked for us. We have been on a number of day trips and this trip definitely did not go close to our other experiences.

This was an incredible day - the magic of Miyajima followed by such a moving experience in Hiroshima. It is a lot to fit in one day but it was very well organised and we did not feel rushed. Our guide was knowledgable and helpful.
