What To Expect

Come along on a scenic drive and freshwater fishing excursion in beautiful Hoonah. With abundant wildlife in this area, keep your cameras ready for potential wildlife sightings. Brown bears, bald eagles, Sitka blacktail deer, ducks, geese, and more are often sighted throughout Southeast Alaska's rainforest. Each angler is equipped with their own rod & reel, and wading gear then professionally guided to have an Alaskan wilderness experience of a lifetime. After a beautiful scenic drive and a short hike, you will arrive at the destined salmon spawning grounds. As with everything in the wilds of Alaska, the fish runs are wild and seasonal. Dolly Varden Char and Cutthroat Trout can be found throughout the summer season. Pink and Chum Salmon run from late June through September, and Silver Salmon from late August through October. The island is home to the densest population of brown bears in all the world. Although there is never any guarantee that visitors will encounter bears, up close encounters with brown bears are common. Not to worry though, your guide has many years of experience living in close proximity with the island's wildlife, and our guest's safety is a #1 priority.

I booked this excursion for my husband, who has wanted to do stream fishing in Icy Strait for 11 years, since the last time we visited Alaska in 2014. He took our 12 year old son, his father, brother, and uncle. They each has such an amazing time. It was raining off and on, but it didn't affect their experience one bit, perhaps it even enhanced it. I think this will be an experience they will relive for years to come. My son just finished his fly fishing merit badge in Boy Scouts and he was the youngest and only one from our group to fly fish! He was so proud and will have bragging rights for a very long time. They each caught so many salmon and trout they lost count. A core memory for sure! Book early and don't miss out on this adventure!

After a small snafu with pick up we had a fantastic day fishing with Chris! My husband got to fly and spinner fish which he loved! I am a very novice fisher and learned quickly how to cast. We each caught a dozen or so fish and even got to see a bear catch one about 50 yards from us! It was an amazing experience! Outstanding! Highly recommend!

My family had a great time on this excursion. Our guide was very knowledgeable and took good care of us. The equipment was great and all provided for us. We had to drive a ways to get to the stream but we enjoyed the scenery. The salmon were a little late this year so we didn't get to fish for any but had good luck with other fish. The rains the night before caused the river to run very high and our guide almost had to cancel but he made it work despite the conditions and we enjoyed ourselves. It would have been smart to bring a change of clothes with us because one of my boys got wet. Our guide lent him his dry coat and we were very greatful. This is a catch and release fishing experience and you need to purchase your own fishing license for 17 and above before you go. Internet is bad so do it before you travel. We would definitely recommend this tour guide and trip to others that want to experience fishing in an Alaskan river.
