Slave Caves
The Shimoni Slave Caves, located near Shimoni village in Kenya, hold historical significance as a grim reminder of the East African slave trade era. Here's a description: History: The caves were used as holding chambers for enslaved Africans before they were transported across the Indian Ocean during the 18th and 19th centuries. Structure: The caves consist of interconnected chambers and passages dug into the coral rock. They are narrow, dark, and naturally cool, which made them suitable for holding large numbers of captives awaiting shipment. Purpose: Captives, mainly captured from the interior of East Africa, were held here in appalling conditions before being transported to slave markets in Zanzibar and beyond. Guided Tours: Today, visitors can explore the caves on guided tours led by local guides who explain the history and significance of the site.

This activity was really nice and the tour guide is an amazing person who explained me a lot about the marine park, the differents fishes and about the islands life. We were not in the best season to see the dolphins but i was still able to see some. I would recommend it !

2hrs swimming amongst the marine life with a short break in the middle for a rest with water and fruits. After finishing the snorkelling we headed towards Wasini Island, a small island approx 3km off the mainland. We had lunch at a beachside cafe, seaweed and chilli chapati to start, followed by chicken & red snapper with fruits to end. The paths are carved from the sharp coral that the island is made from, mangrove trees cover a large area and are surrounded by large boulders of coral. After this our final stop was to the Shimoni Caves. In the 18th century, Shimoni was a major slave holding port on the East African coast. Slave pens were located in the natural cave systems under the town. Spanning a total of 5km, the slaves were ushered in at one end, and then corralled in the pens until their ship had docked. It was another great day, fun and eduction together. Kenya is so interesting and enjoyable 😎🇰🇪👍

We’ve been traveling around Kenya for a while, and I honestly thought the highlight for us would be the beach and swimming. But it turned out to be something much deeper — visiting a local village and the cave once used to imprison captured locals before they were taken as slaves to Tanzania. An unforgettable and very moving experience. Everything was perfectly organized — we saw plenty of dolphins and enjoyed the stunning turquoise sea with white sandy beaches. The guide was fantastic, the captain did a great job, and even our driver gave us interesting commentary along the way about the places we passed. I truly recommend this trip to everyone — it’s absolutely worth the money!
