Please note that the market tour here means a local supermarket tour, which is typically where locals shop. After you meet your host Akiko at the station, she will accompany you to a local supermarket located near the JR station where she will introduce you to the different ingredients used in Japanese cooking. If you like, Akiko can help you purchase local ingredients to take home.

After the tour, join Akiko in her kitchen to make classic Nagoya dishes such as red miso stew, shrimp tempura in a rice ball or fried chicken, Nagoya style. You will also learn to make dashi, the foundation of Japanese cooking. Your cooking class will last about an hour before you sit down to share the Nagoyan style Japanese meal you helped prepare.

Akiko is thrilled about the opportunity to share specialties from Nagoya as a lot of people don’t know how to cook Nagoya-style food. Because of this, many Nagoyans themselves eat their local specialities at restaurants!

Please note, this is not a commercial cooking class, rather this experience is a visit into a Nagoya home to meet a local who is an expert cook, and share Japanese culture and cuisine together.

Please not that the "market tour" is a tour of the local supermarket, not an actual outdoor market!

What To Expect

This market tour involves a tour of the local supermarket where locals generally shop. Akiko will accompany you to a local supermarket located near the JR station. After you meet Akiko at the station she will take you the local supermarket, where she will show and describe the different ingredients used in Japanese cooking and seasoning. If you like, Akiko can help you purchase local ingredients that you can take back home from Japan. After Akiko picks you up from JR Kasugai station, 20 minutes from Nagoya. You will join her in her homer kitchen to make classic Nagoya dishes. In your hands-on cooking class in Nagoya learn to make shrimp tempura in a rice ball or fried chicken Nagoya style and miso pork cutlet sandwich. You will also learn how to make dashi stock from scratch for the miso soup. Your cooking class will last about an hour before you sit down to share the Nagoyan style Japanese meal you helped prepare.

    We made Nagoya style wings, fried pork, and stuffed tempura rice balls. She was absolutely wonderful in teaching us how to cook! She also let us take home the recipes so we can make them at home. The local market review helped us learn more about local grocery stores. The experience we well worth the money!!

    Akiko was a great host. She picked us up from the train, took us shopping, sat down and got to know us, then let us help her make the most wonderful meal, and eventually took us back to the train. Anyone who wants to experience Japanese home cooking at its best should book this tour It was A1...the very best !!!!

    Me and my son were very well received by Akiko. She picked us up at the train station and first took us to a local supermarket. Very nice to see the cultural differences through the supermarket. Then we went to her house where we made several dishes. I recommend the experience!

    Akiko was very accommodating to our wishes (vegetarian) and the experience began with a very interesting shopping trip. The cooking class itself was very interesting and we learned a lot about the dishes and the way of life in Japan. The dishes were very tasty and we also got the recipes so that we can cook them ourselves at home. We would book this course again and can highly recommend it. Thank you Akiko for the great time together!

    Akiko and her helpers were knowledgeable fun. We enjoyed the supermarket tour and the food we made was delicious. She even provided copies of the recipes. This was a highlight of our trip to Japan.

    We booked Travelling Spoon from Nagoya and met Ms. Okabe from Kachigawa. She picked us up at the train station of the same name. We were able to take our suitcases with her after a quick phone call. We just couldn't find any free lockers in Nagoya. We cooked Japanese curry and ramen with her that evening. For the ramen we prepared the dashi and the chashu fresh. We were very happy about that. Despite a few communication difficulties, we enjoyed cooking again after 2 weeks of going to restaurants and having all the ingredients in our hands. She was very helpful and friendly. She included us in everything as much as she could. She also told us about her plans to open a restaurant for edible cactus this year. [a specialty from Kachigawa] We wish her all the best and much success! :) It was a very nice and delicious evening <3

    Akiko was an absolute delight, very accommodating and sweet. As Canadians visiting, the supermarket tour was really neat and gave us some neat perspective! It was a fun experience being invited into her home to get the real authentic, home cooked local experience. She let us do a lot of the prep too which was great and most importantly of all, the food was delicious! Thanks Akiko for the great, memorable experience!

    The tour started with a walk around the nearby supermarket, giving me the chance to ask questions about many of the ingredients that aren't available in the shops at home. Afterwards Akiko took me back to her house to learn how to make 3 dishes. She was incredibly hospitable, despite me booking the course very last minute. I felt really welcome the entire time I was there. She already had everything prepared, including a print out of all the recipes to take home afterwards. She showed me each step at a time before getting me to do it myself. All the food tasted great and I'm confident I will be able to make it all myself using the recipes provided when I get home.

    We had a great time with Akiko-san! She first brought us to a supermarket where she answered all our questions. After that, she brought us to her place where she presented all the meals that we would prepare. She already had the recipes printed so we could bring them with us afterward. The food was delicious! And we even had leftovers for the next day 🙂

    Akiko was a very warm and considerate hostess. Her love of cooking, Japanese culture, and visitors is apparent. We learned many things about Japanese ingredients, food, and cooking that we can take home to share! The meal was delicious and unique to her region. This experience was one of the highlights of l our trip to Japan! You always have a place to stay in our home in Oregon. Thank you Akiko and Meg!
