Our guide Ronnie was awesome he brought fruit treats and knew where to go to get the best sights of the Orangutans. Because he knew all the rangers we able to get some up close time with the baby Orangutan and her mother which was a once in a lifetime experience.. I wholeheartedly recommend this trip.

It was a great tour - we could see the orangutangs up close. Such a special project for conservation - well run and ethical! Vejay was a great driver (very safe) and shared so much information about Penang. He made the trip so much better. We would really recommend this tour. Comfortable vehicle.

Visiting Orangutan Island on December 26, 2025, was a standout experience, primarily thanks to our driver, Ronnie. Punctual, well-spoken, and incredibly friendly, Ronnie provided a safe and comfortable journey while sharing a deep history of Penang and fascinating insights into the orangutans. He truly went above and beyond by facilitating a rare, close-up encounter with a mother and her baby, making the trip feel personal and unique. The sanctuary itself is a remarkable example of responsible wildlife tourism, where humans walk through a "caged" tunnel while the orangutans roam freely across the sanctuary. For anyone planning a visit, I highly recommend going on a weekday morning to avoid the larger, noisier crowds and to catch the animals at their most active before the midday heat. Hiring a private driver like Ronnie is the best way to handle the hour-long trip from Penang as he organises everything for you.

A most memorable return visit to Orangutan island , a rehab and rescue sanctuary that provides a safe habitat for these incredible primates . Thank you Lena for another very informative visit. The orangutans roam freely and are clearly well cared for and loved by the staff. A positive experience and well worth the journey to visit!

Oh wow! We have one of the most perfect days. Our day started at 8 at our hotel meeting a very prompt Ronnie. Although the day was a bit drizzly it didn’t matter, we were assured that all would be well and we would definitely get to see the Orangutans. From out hotel it took about one and a half hours to reach the sanctuary. A short boat ride across the lake took us to where the orangutan live. Even before we got off the boat I had seen my first orangutan in the semi wild, we were lucky enough that it was feeding time so most of the orangutan had come to the feeding stations. In total there are 16 resident orangutan we were fortunate enough to see at least half of them. Remember this is not a zoo but a sanctuary and therefore the animals are allowed to roam and may not necessarily be the be there for you to take photographs of. During our time we were exceptionally lucky in that we were able to see a mother with her newborn baby, Ronnie, our guide had exceptional knowledge of both the sanctuary and of Penang island. Having been a tour guide for over 22 years he was both articulate, friendly, knowledgeable and altogether a great guy to spend time with. We have been so impressed with this tour, that we have booked with Ronnie again on Thursday.
