What To Expect

Roosevelt Arch

The Roosevelt Arch is a rusticated triumphal arch at the north entrance to Yellowstone National Park in Gardiner, Montana, United States. Constructed under the supervision of the US Army at Fort Yellowstone, its cornerstone was laid down by President Theodore Roosevelt (who just happened to be vacationing in the area. Before this it wasn't planned that he be there.)in 1903. The top of the arch is inscribed with a quote from the Organic Act of 1872, the legislation which created Yellowstone, which reads: "For the Benefit and Enjoyment of the People". The arch is constructed of hexagonal blocks of columnar basalt, quarried locally. The arch is 52 feet high. Two towers or buttresses flank the main archway, pierced by pedestrian passages with heavy wood doors. Yellowstone was the first national park in the world, and local citizens felt that it lacked the grand entrance that such an august place demanded

Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces

As one early visitor described the Mammoth Hot Springs, "No human architect ever designed such intricate fountains as these. The water trickles over the edges from one to another, blending them together with the effect of a frozen waterfall." The hot springs were an early commercialized attraction for those seeking relief from ailments in the mineral waters. Today, to preserve these unique and fragile features, soaking in the hot springs is prohibitted. Mammoth Hot Springs are a surface expression of the deep magmatic forces at work in Yellowstone. Although these springs lie outside the Yellowstone Caldera boundary, scientists surmise that the heat from the hot springs comes from the same magmatic system that fuels other Yellowstone hydrothermal areas. A large fault system runs between Norris Geyser Basin and Mammoth, which may allow thermal water to flow between the two. Also, multiple basalt eruptions have occurred in this area. Thus, basalt may be a heat source for the Mammoth area.

Let me start this by saying that we are not photographers. We realized after we booked the tour that we may not be Brian's typical demographic but we wanted beautiful pictures and thought that having a trained guide take us to the most beautiful spots would be the best way to spend our limited time in the park, and we were right! Brian was fantastic. He was so knowledgeable about the park, the hirtosy, and the animals and allowed us to take as many photos and take as long as we wanted in every place that he took us. We got some really beautiful photos that we plan on blowing up and putting in all of our homes!

We had a lovely morning with Brian! He is so knowledgeable and passionate about the park, and shared lots of great facts about its geology, wildlife, seasons, history, and culture. Just a really kind, friendly person to spend some time with. Brian was great at calling out photo subjects and giving suggestions for things to capture -- I only wish I'd taken better advantage of his photographic expertise. We booked only a half-day tour, and if I were to do it again I'd book a full day to ensure more time to find lots of animals and get more coaching.

Does start very early in the morning. Brian will take you to Lamar Valley. He'll also give you tips on photo taking. The whole experience is great!

We had the best first day @ Yellowstone with Brian! He knew where to go and what to look for to see the wildlife. We struck a bit of luck and saw a wolf, several grizzlies, coyotes, a bald eagle, etc! Having a professional tour guide to help navigate this enormous park, plus photography coaching was key to our time & investment in our Yellowstone trip!

We had a great time hunting for wildlife and some fall color to take pictures of. Unfortunately nothing too crazy, but we did get some great shots of bison as a herd of them came down the road right toward us. Didn't sneak up on any beer or wolves, but that's life. Brian still made the trip memorable and fun.

Highly recommend Brian for a professional photography tour of Yellowstone. He customizes his time to make sure that you get what you want out of the experience. He is very personable and fun. He provided tips and suggestions so that our pictures were great. He also gave restaurant suggestions when we ventured out on our own and even kept in touch after. We will hire him again if we return to Yellowstone.
