Enjoy a day in the mountains by exploring 2 UNESCO sites - the Rila Monastery and the Boyana church. The 8-hour day tour will be with a group and a professional guide in English. In the monastery, you will have a 40-minute guided tour and 2,5 hours free time to make photos, check the museums and the shops, and have lunch. The visit of the Boyana church, although short, is definitely worth since you will see its amazing 800-years old frescoes and learn their history from your guide!
*Women should have their knees and shoulders covered in the monastery!
*If your tour is on a weekend day during the summer, the restaurants could be crowded so you can bring your own food from Sofia in order to have more free time and the monastery.
*The Boyana church is closed on the 1st of January, on the Sunday of the Orthodox Easter, on the 24th of December, 25th of December - and on such days the tour is done only to the Rila Monastery.

There are not many dining options around the Monastery - there are bakeries where you can enjoy pastry. As an alternative, you can always bring your own food with you.

This was a terrible experience from start to finish. The bus area was extremely crowded and lacked organization, so I was sent to the wrong bus multiple times. Once, on the bus the Spanish tour guide was identified, but not the English guide. It wasn’t until after the 2 hour drive and arrival at the Rila Monastery that I was informed there would be no English Tour Guide, and I was to wander the Monastery by myself! Our tour guide, Ivo, was not clear in his answers or explanations. When I first asked where was the English tour he kept saying, “Wait here”, that was my answer every time I asked for 15 minutes. When I asked when the bus would leave, he said, “Come back in an hour”, although the website offers a full day tour. Later I realized, he was offering me to join the cave group, whose bus was leaving in the first hour of being at the Monastery. I was very suspicious of this as I did not pay for this excursion nor had any knowledge of it. When I asked him what was in the cave he said, “I don’t know I’ve never been.” However, when another woman asked about the guide tour of the cave he said he was the tour guide. Additionally, Ivo seemed slightly creepy to me because he flirted with all the women on the bus— asking their ages, calling them baby— and never giving a straight answer to any question. As a solo female traveler I was very uncomfortable with this behavior. During the cave excursion, I stayed in the bus with 3 other women, and he stayed chatting with them; while the rest of the group navigated the cave by themselves. The experience was nothing as advertised, I was down right fearful at points and near tears. The Rila Monastery was beautiful, but not pretty enough for this headache. If you still want to come, I highly suggest booking a half day tour and using a different company.

Our tour guide, Alex, really knew his history and ran the tour as a professional. It was wonderful to hear interesting details of the sites we visited firsthand. Thanks for a great experience!

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Rila Monastery and Boyana Church. Both are well worth a visit and our guide Tuni was excellent and definitely enhanced our visit, providing us with lots of interesting information in a friendly and engaging manner. The Monastery and Church are definitely a ‘must see’ in Sofia and we would highly recommend to family and friends.
