It’s possible to do this tour on your own, buying tickets at the Robben’s Island ferry. A couple of Cape Town residents in front of me did just that. As a tourist with limited time, I appreciated the private pick up from my City Center Hotel, the guaranteed ticket, and the fact that my driver was waiting for me five hours later when the ferry returned. Poignant bleak touching experience, particularly the maximum security prison part where we were guided by a former prisoner. Triumph of the human spirit. Lessons learned from history that should never be repeated. As Tom, our guide told us, there are only 500 former prisoners still alive to tell their story. And many prisoners were involved in fighting for freedom along with Nelson Mandela.

Be prepared to walk, the boat ride over was very nice. Touring the prison and hearing the stories from our guide (who was actually a prisoner there} will cut through you deep....! The set up is very efficient and didn't take long at all. When I visit Cape Town I'll definitely be going again.

The Robben Island tour, including pick-up and drop-off in Cape Town, was very comfortable. Everything went according to plan. The driver (Fayical) who took me was attentive and explained the entire tour.

Highly recommended for tourists who wants to immerse in the history of South Aftica. It was a privilege to see the prison cell of Nelson Mandela and felt the suffering he and others have to go through to fight freedom inside the jail.

This tour is misleading and takes advantage of travellers who didn't do their research. What they're selling is just the ticket and a van transfer to and from your hotel and the harbor. The actual tour guides that explain everything come with the Robbens Island ticket and is not supplied by this company. The Robbens Island tickets are easy to purchase yourself online and costs 600 rands per person (approx $30 USD). This company is essentially charging you an additional $50 per person for the pickup and dropoff at your hotel. Ubers are so affordable in Cape Town that this experience was a complete rip off. Would recommend for you to just buy the tickets yourself and call an Uber.
