Very nice personable guy with a boat so clean you would think it was new! We saw all the things and he was quick to move us around for better viewing. With a capacity of 6 you couldn’t get a better experience.

We booked our excursion from Sitka Nautical Tours. Brad Wheeler, our captain sent detailed instructions for meeting him and locating his pickup point. His boat was docked directly behind the excursion center and was an easy walk. There was a total of six passengers on board. The boat was nicely laid out with pilot house seating for all and a rear deck for observation. It was recently built, handled well and we felt very comfortable. Captain Brad was ex-military and finished his career in Alaska. He spent 20 years on the local police force and operated the police boat before retiring and starting his own tour company. He gave us a very detailed and thorough safety briefing, and he had every imaginable safety device on board. He had several sets a quality binocular on board for our use and a cooler of water and soft drinks. We left the dock feeling like we were in good hands. While we did not see any bears along the shoreline, but we did see lots of Salmon leaping out of the water. As we headed out from the backwater to the harbor, we saw several eagles which were quite impressive. When we got out into the harbor, we saw sea lions lounging on a buoy. They were quite massive and did not seem to be bothered by our presence in the least. We also saw sea otters; some were rafted up and hanging out together while a single otter floated on its back feasting on shellfish. We learned that sea otters use a rock to open the shellfish and that they are known to keep the same rock their entire life. They store it in a small pouch of skin on their body. Once clear of the buoy we were treated to numerous orca sightings. They were quite massive, much bigger than the whales we saw in Iceland. Captain Brad did an excellent job anticipating their movements and keeping us at decent viewing angles. When one popped up close to the boat it was quite a rush!! We really enjoyed the smaller boat excursion, never felt unsafe and definitely would sail with Brad again. If you find yourself in Sitka this is an excellent excursion option.
