Caroni Lagoon National Park
This tour takes you into the beautiful serene landscape of the untouched mangrove Caroni Swamp, a world-class destination for bird watchers and outdoor enthusiasts, and home to the National Bird of Trinidad, the bright red Scarlet Ibis. Bird life is particularly abundant in Trinidad and this tour provides a delightful introduction with appeal to bird-watching enthusiasts as well as those just interested in the outdoors. The Caroni Bird Sanctuary is a 48 square mile wetland area on Trinidad’s western coast, part mangrove swamp and part lagoon. Upon arrival you will board a large flat-bottomed boat with outboard motor and slowly travel along the beautiful waterways admiring the unusual landscape and variety of birds, crustaceans and other wildlife. Birds you may spot include the neo-tropical cormorant, large-billed tern, tri-colored heron, red-capped cardinal, snowy egret and bi-colored cane-bill – to name just a few. Red, black and white mangroves populate the edges of the waterways and many tiny oysters cling to the roots of the mangroves. There are also possible sightings of non-poisonous snakes in the branches of the trees, caimans or silky anteaters. Arriving in the wide lagoon, the boat becomes your floating vantage point to witness the protected brightly colored Scarlet Ibis. The birds feed and nest in this area and every sunset they fly in unison to roost, a spectacular cloud of red against the evening sky. They settle in the mangroves as the sun is setting, the quiet atmosphere of the lagoon adding atmosphere to a memorable trip.

This bird watching tour is so serene and peaceful that I had to do it again my second time in Trinidad. The guides have a lot of ecological knowledge and good sense of humor. The way they can spot the wildlife is so amazing. This time we even got to see capybara! Highly recommend for anyone into birds or relaxing boat rides

I had a great experience on the Sunset Boat Tour into the Caroni Wetlands with Nanan Tours. Hotel pickup and drop-off were included, and the driver was on time and professional, which made the start and end of the tour smooth and stress-free. The real highlight was the guide, who was incredibly knowledgeable and engaging. He shared fascinating facts about the mangrove ecosystem, local wildlife, and especially the scarlet ibis, Trinidad’s national bird. Watching flocks of ibis return to roost at sunset was a truly beautiful and peaceful moment. A few tips: wear sunscreen and bring insect repellent—the bugs come out as the sun goes down, and the sun can still be strong even late in the day. Also, pay attention to where you sit on the boat. You’ll be going through narrow channels lined with mangrove roots, and you’ll likely have to duck multiple times as the branches hang low. Overall, it’s a well-organized, scenic tour that gives you a different side of Trinidad’s natural beauty. I’d definitely recommend it to nature lovers and photographers.

The lake was beautiful and the birds were amazing. Best place to visit in Trinidad and Tobago. Highly recommended to visit at least for once.

This tour of the Caroni Wetlands with Island Experiences was such a perfect way to explore the canals and see wildlife that would otherwise be difficult to see, like flamingos, scarlet ibises and even caimans. We were so fortunate to see flamingos at a respectful distance while scarlet ibises flew overhead to return to their island. My guide Khaleel accompanied me and was able to explain the history of the area, as well as tell me more about the local wildlife and foliage. I was grateful for Khaleel’s explanations and overall guiding. I did see other tourists whose guides simply showed them to the boat and then picked them up afterward, while Khaleel was the only one to stay and provide a top-class experience. I would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone visiting Trinidad.

Wonderful experience to see flocks of the Scarlett Ibis coming back to roost in the trees at sunset. Also saw tree boa snakes and the smallest ant eater.

This is a really unique experience to see nature at its finest. We were picked up promptly by our driver, Junior, who, en route gave us lots of interesting pieces of information about Port Of Spain. We arrived a little bit early for the tour, but it gave us time to visit the information centre and boardwalk at Caroni. We realised that my husband had not use any mosquito protection, but Junior found some and saved the day-or my husband’s arms!! The boat trip was serene and we saw a number of different animals on the way to the viewpoint. We did have to wait a while before the Ibis made their appearance along with Egrets, flamingos and herons, but it was well worth the wait-and filled with a snack provided by the boat company. I would wholeheartedly recommend this trip.

A late afternoon boat trip on the Caroni River with its mangrove forest is something of the most beautiful Trinidad has to offer for nature lovers! The leisurely chugging on the many side arms of the river, the observation of the diverse birdlife, among others with the bright red Scarlett Ibis, the national bird of Trinidad is something of the most beautiful this Caribbean island has to offer!

Our driver Junior was prompt and friendly. The actual wetland/swamp tour was v interesting passing through the mangroves, seeing a selection of local birds, plus tree snakes. The highlight is waiting and watching the scarlet ibis relocate for night, so serene. Also the egrets and flamingos. Sadly there was a small amount of rubbish on the route, which would not take much effort to clear.

This was a breathtaking tour through stunning scenery and wonderfully colourful wildlife of every shade of pink, coral, pastel, fuscia with crazy critters , cautious catfish and slithering serpents! The mangroves were a delight unto themselves with these wiry ,weedy branches winding and weaving through the waters either side of the boat. It was a lengthy tour which really allowed us alot of time to relax and search for these creatures and we saw so many. The guide was personable and really took the time to chat about the country and made sure as a solo traveller to take me to experience some Trinidadian dinner before returning me safely to the hotel. I was very grateful for that kindness. A lovely must-see mangrove tour ! The company was excellent and professional .
