Semenggoh Wildlife Centre
For over 20 years, the wardens here trained young orangutans, who had been orphaned or rescued from captivity, how to survive in the wild. The success of this program has left the surrounding forest reserve with a thriving population of healthy adolescent and young adult orangutans, who are now breeding in the wild. The program has been transferred to Matang Wildlife Centre, but Semenggoh is still home to its successful graduates, semi-wild orang utans, and their babies. They spend most of their time roaming the forest but frequently come back to the Centre for a free meal. If it is the fruiting season in the forest, some or even all of them may not come to feed. This in itself is a good sign and another step on the way to full rehabilitation. Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is home to semi–wild orang utans trained to fend for themselves in their natural surroundings.Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is home to semi–wild orang utans trained to fend for themselves in their natural surroundings.

The orangutans were everywhere and almost seemed to pose for photos. The only negative is the tour group gave me a choice for pickup time and I selected 9 am. However, the feeding times are 8-10 and 2-4, so when we arrived, the morning feeing was over. I'm surprised they didn't realize that a 9 am pickup would not work - I certainly didn't know that. Luckily, I had a diver / guide who spent time with me until the 2 pm showing. This might not have worked for others.
