This tour was awesome!! Got a short ride through Hopkins Village as well as a history lesson of the Garifuna people and their culture. Then a very involved cooking class and was shown how to use every part of the coconut. Finally, a drum circle class that was so fun! Would HIGHLY recommend to anyone travelling to Hopkins to learn about the Garifuna especially through this course.

  • Great family experience hosted by a friendly Garifuna family

The family that runs the Garifuna cultural cooking class is warm & friendly & make it a great experience. After one the younger folks sent us over by kayak, we started by learning about Garifuna culture, spirituality & how to prepare cassava from the grandfather. He then took us through the garden to the kitchen, explain the medicinal value of different plants along the way & giving us plant leaves to smell & guess their names/flavors. Then we spent time in the kitchen with his daughter in-law and her sister in-law in the kitchen. We were given just-fried plantains & juice as a snack. We learned how to open our own coconuts. Then we learned & did the other work of making a traditional hudutu meal, including mashing boiled plantains in a big churner. The meal itself was delicious and we made sure to take down the recipe to try at home! I wore a traditional dress (there’s a rack of clothes to choose from), which was a nice touch.

It was soooo amazing! We had so much fun while learning. You learn about the culture and history. And then go and do some cooking with laughs and fun. We also were able take some coconut fudge and it was SO DELICIOUS! Oh my goodness!

From the storytelling, to the walk through the garden, the meal prep and wrapping up with a traditional drumming lesson, this was the highlight of our trip to Belize. The locals were so welcoming and proud of their traditional cuisine. Thank you for sharing!
